• This is the way that some cultural products have
  a higher value or status than others

• High brow or high cultural taste belongs to the
  middle and upper classes
• Art, literature, received pronunciation, manners,
  certain TV shows , films, newspapers etc

• Low brow or low cultural taste belongs to the
  working classes
• Different ways of speaking and behaving and
  certain TV shows , films, newspapers etc

• Children learn taste through habitus
• Middle class children are more likely to be taken
  to museums, encouraged to read literature etc

Cultural capital

• Bourdieu said that because of this middle class
  children are more likely to have more cultural
  capital
• This means they are more likely to do better in
  education etc

• These tastes are not always fixed
• Cultural products and practices can change status
• Become unfashionable or die away
• Become iconic

Sub cultural capital

• There are other types of cultural capital
• Youth culture You might not be very cool if
  you like certain things
• Sub culture often reject main culture or have
  their own types of taste

  practices can be valued
