History of the SMC
  • Founding members
  • UCLA
  • Indiana
  • Johns Hopkins
  • Duke
  • Important dates
  • Fall and Winter 2001 Original idea, based on
    release of new OAI-PMH protocol
  • March 2002 Planning meeting at IU
  • September 2003 Version 1.0 release.
  • Not much since then!

7
1st phase metadata
  • Simple Dublin Core
  • See example on your handout
  • This format is required for OAI-PMH
  • But you can supplement it!
  • DC usage guide for sheet music
  • Reproduced on your handout
  • Guidance on dealing with descriptive issues for
sheet music not obvious in DC
  • Attempt to gain more consistency across
    aggregated metadata

8
Challenges in aggregation
9
So where can we go from here?
  • We need more robust description MODS?
  • See handout for an example
  • Many implementers just want a set of rules to
    follow!
  • We have an opportunity to build community
consensus around description for sheet music
  • But we need tools to make it easier

Future of the SMC
  • Needs to grow!
  • Enhanced end-user functionality
  • De-duplication of results?
  • Tagging, other means of contributing metadata?
  • Integration into tools like Zotero?
  • More help for contributors
  • Additional metadata guidelines?
  • Selection for digitization?
  • Copy cataloging?

13
New grant proposal
  • UCLA as lead institution developing grant
proposal to do some of this work
  • To be sent to IMLS February 1, 2009
  • Some possible technical features
  • OAI-PMH Static Repository
  • Expanding beyond OAI-PMH
  • Looking for partners! (contact me)
