Title: Shared Storybook Reading

1
Shared Storybook Reading
  • Presentation by Amy Pennington

2
Definition
  • Shared Reading-The active involvement and shared
interaction of both the adult reader and the
child or group of children during book reading
that focuses on the words, pictures, and story

3
Opportunities for Learning
4
Elements of Effective Shared Reading
  • Physical Arrangement-both adult and child should
be able to see and touch book at same time, in a
    quiet and comfortable environment
  • Social Involvement-positive and rewarding
interactions, conversational speech used to help
    build a relationship
  • Materials Selected-interesting story, colorful
    and appealing illustrations, and limited
narrative (a few lines per page)
  • Reading Style- varying pitch, vocal
    characteristics, varying volume and emotion
  • Conversation-promote conversation, use words
other than what is written in the book

5
Example of Shared Reading
  • Conversational Target-Phonology
  • Focus on developing the childs speech production
    and awareness of speech sounds
  • Consonants are the easiest to focus on
  • Selecting a target sound and storybook
  • Once the target sound is selected, find a book
that contains at least 3 different words with
target sound in the initial position and can be
    backed up by the illustrations

6
Example Cont
  • Conducting the Session
  • Preview the book in advance to determine area to
    introduce target
  • Model the correct production of sound and point
    to illustration
  • Encourage child to try and make the sound, reward
    them when made correctly
  • Once sound is correct, encourage them to try it
    with the word
  • If the child is having trouble and getting
frustrated, choose another target, or another
    strategy

7
Example Cont
  • Excerpt from a session-selected target is /f/
  • Adult Havent you heard of the blanket fairy?
Owens's parents hadnt. Mrs. Tweezers filled them
in. (pause) I hear that fuh sound again. Do
you hear it, too? Its in the word fairy. Listen
    to the word fuh-fuh-fairy.
  • Child vuh-vuh-vuh
  • Adult That was a good try, but not exactly
right. This time say it like a whisper.
  • Child fuh-fuh
  • Adult Well done, you got it! Try it again.
  • Child fuh-fuh
  • Adult Perfect! Now try the fuh sound in the
word fairy. Start with the word fuh-fuh-fairy
  • Child fuh-fuh-very
  • Adult Nice try, but its not quite right. Try
    again with a whisper.
  • Child fuh-fuh-fairy
  • Adult WOW! You did it, good job! Now lets keep
reading and will try it again later.
