Effective Lesson Planning
  • By the end of this session, participants will be
    able to
  • State the primary purpose of lesson planning,
  • Identify the key elements of an effective lesson
    plan, and
  • Develop a rudimentary lesson plan that includes
    the key elements.

3
A Truth
  • In the absence of clearly defined goals, we
become strangely loyal to performing daily acts
    of trivia.

4
Another Truth
  • Effective instruction depends on a clear idea of
where you want to go and how you plan to get
    there.

5
What is a lesson plan?
  • A lesson plan is a road map for classroom
    instruction.
  • The directions provide structure to the teacher
and students and assure that all reach the
    desired destination.

6
What does a lesson plan look like?
  • Timeframe
  • Purpose
  • IEP Goals Objective/Benchmarks
  • Standards
  • Assessment
  • Lesson Description
  • Accommodations/Modifications
  • Environment
  • Materials
  • Reflection

7
Lesson Plan Elements
  • Determine the Time Frame
  • Derived from your backward design plan
  • Should be a consideration but not the most
important factor in developing lesson plans
  • Thematic vs. Standard Units

8
Lesson Plan Elements (cont.)
  • Overarching Purpose (What do you want students to
know and be able to do?
  • I want students to be able to name skill.
  • I want students to understand describe concept.

9
Lesson Plan Elements (cont.)
  • Identify IEP Goals Objectives/Benchmarks
  • Students are working on the following IEP goals
    specify.
  • Identify Standards
  • I am addressing content and/or performance
    standards Content Area/Domain, Strand/Cluster,
    etc.

10
Lesson Plan Elements (cont.)
  • Assessment Methods (How will you know students
    have achieved the lesson purpose?)
  • Assessment instruments and strategies should
measure student progress toward the learning
    objectives.
  • Types of classroom based assessments

11
Lesson Plan Elements (cont.)
  • Describe the lesson. (Provide enough details so
that someone else could implement the lesson.)
  • Introduce the lesson get their attention!
  • Deliver content and implement activities.
  • Close the lesson summarize and find out what
    they know.

12
Lesson Plan Elements (cont.)
  • Content and Activity Guidelines
  • Should support the overarching purpose!
  • Assign tasks to all participants.
  • Make it relevant, meaningful, and culturally and
    linguistically appropriate.
  • Should be challenging yet achievable
  • (90 rule)

13
Lesson Plan Elements (cont.)
  • INDIVIDUALIZE!
  • Identify needed accommodations, modifications,
    supports
  • Structure the classroom environment
  • e.g., Seating arrangements, student grouping
    strategies, materials staging, teacher cues

14
Lesson Plan Elements (cont.)
  • Identify materials needed
  • Be specific and comprehensive
  • Reflect
  • What worked? What didnt work? How do I know?
  • What would you do differently next time and why?
  • How can I build on what I learned?

15
Small Group Activity
  • Within each small group, follow the steps
provided in the order described during the
instructor presentation to develop a lesson plan.
  • Use one of your backward design plans to generate
an idea for a lesson plan.
  • Use this opportunity to help each other
brainstorm ways to address purpose, IEP goals,
and standards within a single lesson.
  • By 615 be prepared to share your lesson plan
with the rest of the class.
