• First released HP-UX 1.0, HP-UX was introduced in
  1986. HP-UX is largely based on System V, HP-UX

• A popular and free version of UNIX that runs on
  Intel microprocessors.
• FreeBSD is distributed in executable and source
  code form.
• The source code enables ambitious users to
  actually extend the operating system.

• Acronym for Advanced Interactive eXecutive
• a version of UNIX produced by IBM
• AIX runs on a variety of computers, including PCs
  and workstations.

Solaris

• An Unix -based operating environment developed by
  Sun Microsystems.
• Originally developed to run on Sun's SPARC
  workstations
• Solaris now runs on many workstations from other
  vendors.

Why Linux?

• Craig Silverstein, director of technology for
  Google
• "The company has stuck with Linux for three main
  reasons first, because the software can be
  downloaded for free second, because Red Hat
  offers impressive support services, according to
  Silverstein and thirdly because Linux is open
  source, meaning Google's programmers can tinker
  with the code to adapt it to their needs.
