Title: TANJONG KATONG PRIMARY MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

1
TANJONG KATONG PRIMARYMATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
  • EXAMINATION FORMAT
  • There are 3 sections
  • Section A consists of 15 multiple choice
    questions (25 of the marks)
  • Section B consists of 20 short answer questions
    (20 of the marks)
  • Section C consists of 15 structured /
long-answer questions (55 of the marks)

CONTENT TO BE ASSESSED

HOW PUPILS CAN HELP THEMSELVES
  • Pupils should
  • Have a right attitude towards Maths want to
    learn and to do well
  • Have consistent practice. Hence the old-age
saying Practice makes Perfect still holds true
  • Be able to use different heuristics to solve
problems. Some examples of heuristics are
  • - Guess and Check
  • - Listing
  • - Draw a model
  • - Look for Pattern
  • - Work Backwards

4
  • Be disciplined and patient while working out the
    sums.
  • show intermediate steps leading to the solution
with the necessary correct units and statements
  • - compute the sums with patience especially in
multiplication and division involving money /
    fractions

5
  • Read questions carefully, highlight the key
information,eg. shaded area / unshaded area
  • Area of circle / semicircle often mixed up
    with perimeter
  • Know all the skills in order to apply them
  • - formulae and the heuristic approach to solving
    problems

6
  • Draw models or any form of illustrations in
problem-solving as they translate words or
    information into pictorial representations.
  • REINFORCE and INSTIL all these practices when
    coaching your child at home.

7
GENERAL TIPS FOR PARENTS
  • Be like me
  • Show your child the whole process, not just
the product. Show your child how you persevere to
    get the solution.
  • Tell me
  • Get your child to tell you how he or she solved
the problem. Get your child to tell you the
steps. Get your child to tell you the method.
  • Does it make sense?
  • Get into the habit of asking if an answer made
    sense.
  • The Rod, Not the Fish
  • Provide hints, not the answer. Give a step. Ask
    a question.

8
Some sample questions and the solutions
  • Alan made 5 figures. The figures were either
squares or triangles. Each square needed 4
toothpicks. Each triangle needed 3 toothpicks.
Alan used 16 toothpicks. How many triangles did
    he make?
  • Solution (Use the heuristic called systematic
    list)

9
  • A grocer was selling red apples at twice the
price he was selling green ones. Of the 70 apples
he sold during the day, 30 were red. If red
apples were sold for 90 cents each, what were the
grocers takings for the day from the apple
    sales?
  • Solution (Use of model drawing)
  • 30 of 70
  • 30 X 70 21 red apples ______ A 1m
  • 100
  • 70 21 49 green apples ______ A 1m
  • 21 X 90 cents 18.90 ________ M 1m
  • 49 X 45 cents 22.05 ________ M 1m
  • Total 18.90 22.05
  • 40.95_______________A 1m
