His Struggle Against the Apartheid

• When he was young he was in anti-Apartheid
  politics. He was enrolled as a student at the
  University of Natal Medical School, in the black
  section. While he was there he became involved
  with the NUSAS. The group was dominated by white
  liberals. They failed to represent the needs of
  black students. So he resigned in 1969, and tried
  to find more organizations.

His Philosophy

• His philosophy was blacks in South Africa need to
  search for self identity and he hoped the people
  will build up pride in their culture. Steves
  famous slogan is Black is Beautiful. It means
  that even though blacks are different they should
  still be able to look at themselves as beautiful.

How They Silenced Steve

• While Steve and his organization were in King
  Williams town the government banned anyone from
  leaving the town. If they left it would be
  illegal. The police caught Steve leaving and put
  him in jail. They beat him and poisoned him until
  he died.

How Steve Died

• While he was in prison he was beaten with a hose
  and pushed into a wall. The police officers were
  beating him because He tried to sit down while
  being questioned. His head was pushed into a
  wall with such force that head blows occurred
  shifting his brain inside his head. He was found
  six days later after the killing naked lying dead
  in his jail cell. Some say he was also poisoned
  along with the beating. After he died a South
  African newspaper editor wanted the police to
  publish the truth but they refused.
