4Description of the project
General aim To bring together institutions
working in the field of adult education and
cultivation of memory
- Contribution to the building of shared historical
knowledge starting from the real stories of real
people who have lived and are living in Europe.
- Active citizenshipValorization of the personal
experiences and stories of European
citizenspromotion of a sense of European
citizenship through the narration of individual
stories
5Specific objective
- to bring to the surface experiences and
individual events which have given form and
substance to our feeling European. - All the possible meanings which the idea of
Europe takes on for the individual political and
economic, cultural and artistic, geographical,
etc.
6One of the questions on which we worked
What events in our lives have contributed to
creating a sense of Europe in us? And in what
does this feeling of Europe consist? We looked
for the traces of those experiences and way of
thinking in personal writings and stories
- Memory archives writings going back to a time
when Europe did not yet exist, since this is
often material written before the advent of the
European Union
- Interviews and collections of life stories
present-day stories of people who feel European
7- We are discovering a fascinating invisible
Europe, which corresponds to those experiences
which are at the origin of feeling European
travel, friendships, job-seeking, love
- And also experiences connected to the great
historical and political events which have swept
over Europe
8Adults involved in the participating
institutions as students, teachers or employees.
Participants
Group activities
autobiographical and biographical research
(historical research as well)
translation of the texts into the languages of
the project.
The groups worked in their place of
residenceThey come together periodically in
trans-national meetings.
9What we have achieved
- Development of a shared work methodology
- Production of autobiographical writings on
personal experiences of Europe, on themes such as
Narrating Europe through an Object, or Feeling
European - Interviews, seeking particularly significant
stories about feeling European - Research in the archives of personal writings
(diaries, autobiographies, letters) seeking
stories of life experiences connected to the idea
of Europe or feeling European - Translation of the most significant texts into
Italian, German and Spanish, French (in the
second year)
10- Research of a historical and cultural nature on
Europe - We participated in a European conference on the
methods of qualitative research in sociology
(ESREA Conference) -
- We participated in the prestigious National Diary
Prize of Pieve Santo Stefano, in Italy with a
conference on the project - We have begun building the project site,
www.europestories.org - We have launched the European Autobiographical
Competition Narrating Europe, which each
partner is publicizing in their own country, but
which is open to all European citizens.
11Results obtained so far
- We are expecting three further trans-national
meetings -
- We are developing a theatre workshop Narrating
Europe which will lead to a performance at the
final event - We will collect the most significant stories in
an anthology which will illustrate the many forms
in which Europe lives in the hearts and minds of
individuals. The anthology will be written in
Italian, German, Spanish, French. - We will fine-tune the site as a tool for the
dissemination of this material - We will organize both a trans-national event and
a series of local events.
12Europe cannot be built in a day, nor will it be
built all at once, but it will rise from the
concrete actions which lead above all to true
solidarity (Schuman 9
May 1950)This is the direction in which this
project is going
