• MISSION
• To create and drive the worldwide implementation
  of standards to improve the supply and demand
  chain

• Develop global, open, multi-sectorial standards,
• Train and educate on the standards,
• Promote and help to implement standards, thus
  facilitating best business solutions.

• To be the number 1 Standards Organization in

History and milestones (1)

• 1974 first commercial scanning of UPC (universal
  product code)
• barcode in USA
• 1974 manufacturers and retailers from 12
  European countries decide
• to develop similar system for Europe
• 1977 set up of European Article Number
  Association (EAN)
• 1981 renamed International Article Numbering
  Association
• 1990 agreement with Uniform Code Council (UCC)
  of USA to
• co-manage development of global standards
  system
• (EAN.UCC System)
• 1992 name changes to EAN International
• 2004 name changes to GS1

  Specifications, Global User Manual, industry
  guidelines, brochures, etc.)
