Objectives
  • To provide students an opportunity
  • to utilize their language skills in an authentic
    environment, and
  • to deepen their understanding and appreciation of
    cultural aspects of Japan.

  • Students will have ample opportunities to speak
    Japanese in doing every day tasks.
  • Students will have language tasks to practice
    their Japanese according to their language
    levels.
  • Students will visit a school (Tamagawa Gakuen,
    Harkers exchange school) in Japan and
    communicate with high-school students in Japan.

  • Students will visit important cultural sites and
    learn about the historical background of Japan.
  • Students will see major cities and observe
    contemporary life of Japan.
  • Students will have the unique cultural
    experiences of seeing traditional performing
    arts, staying in a temple and a traditional inn,
    and making traditional crafts.

Eligibility
  • A participant needs to be a Harker student who
  • (1) is a freshman, a sophomore, or a junior in
    the Upper School, and
  • (2) is currently taking Japanese at Harker.

Eligibility
  • Among those who qualify, the priority goes to the
    students who
  • are currently in Japanese 2 or above, and
  • are either in Japanese 5 now, or
  • will continue their study of Japanese next year.

DAY 1 - The Flight
  • Saturday, June 11th (last day of school is
    Thursday, June 9th) Harker students meet at
    Saratoga Avenue campus to board the bus to go to
    San Francisco International Airport.
  • The group will board ANA flight from San
    Francisco to Kansai Intl Airport.

Day 2 - Osaka
  • Arrive at Kansai Airport
  • Clear Customs and Immigration
  • Train to Via Inn Shin-Osaka
  • Check in

Day 3- Nara
  • Local Trains to Nara City
  • Walking tour of Nara Park
  • Todaiji Temple
  • Kasuga Grand Shrine
  • Dinner in Osaka

Day 4 - Miyajima
  • Shinkansen to Hiroshima
  • Local trains and Ferry to Miyajima Island
  • Visit Itsukushima Shrine and Mt. Misen (Free

Day 12 - San Francisco
  • Tuesday, June 21st 1015 am
  • Arrive at SFO on ANA Flight NH008
  • Clear Immigration and Customs and meet families
    in the International Terminal

Travel Insurance
  • Health Insurance is mandatory for all
    participants of this trip. Students will be
    required to show insurance at SFO before
    departure. Most health plans are valid overseas
    and do not need to be augmented.
  • Travel Insurance is not required, but is
    recommended AAA has inexpensive short-term
    policies.
  • Cancellation Insurance is also recommended and
    can be purchased from AAA.

Cost
  • The trip is estimated to be approximately 2,800
    3,000 per student for the entire program. Costs
    will be finalized in Spring of 2005, depending on
    the number of students and travel arrangements.
  • A first payment of 400 will be required by 3/7,
    2005.
  • Final payment will be required by 5/1, 2005
  • All payments must be made by 5/1, 2005 in order
    for the student to travel.

Familys commitment
  • The Harker student applying must commit to follow
    all Harker school rules and regulations during
    the trip. Students are considered to still be in
    school during the trip and must act accordingly.
  • Students must have a valid US Passport in order
    to travel.
  • Attend a pre-trip meeting in May (to be
    scheduled) to review the trip to Japan.
