Title: DAY ONE
1powerpoint puppets
Basic Outline - A shadow puppet making and
performance project.
Project involves one artist duration 4 day
sessions, over a 2 week period in a primary /
secondary school year 5-9. Jonathan Hayter-
shadow puppeteer, and workshop facilitator.
DAY ONE A performance presentation - this is
usually The Ramayana section of our own show
Rama. The children are encouraged to ask
questions about the presentation and are
encouraged in pairs to try the artists Javanese
style puppets. Storyboarding in groups is
encouraged for the visual development of the
chosen theme, or themes. A script can be written
for the final presentation.
DAY TWO The young people are organised into
groups, the children then work on painting
background scenes, which are then photographed
with a digital camera. The backgrounds can be
created with a variety of materials, such as
collage effects, paint etc., and be made as large
as A2.
DAY THREE A puppet making workshop on the chosen
theme, making coloured as well as shadow puppets.
The backgrounds are completed with each group,
using the scanned paintings from day two.
Animations are added to the power point
presentations.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION The project can be run
on any national curriculum topic. It covers
the following subjects DT ICT Music, art,
history, English R.E and light and dark in
science. Max no of participants 30
Students Blackout facility must be provided by
the venue
EQUIPMENT MATERIALS To be supplied by
school Art Craft Materials Video projector
and VHS video recorder CD / Tape player One
multi socket extension cable
DAY FOUR The performance is rehearsed by the
group, using the childrens shadow puppets,
music, percussion and the power point
backgrounds, projected using the artists screen,
the schools whiteboard projector and a
laptop. The performance of the work can be made
to the school, or parents. This process will be
video documented.
