Title: Coring%20Recovering%20rock%20samples%20for:

1
CoringRecovering rock samples for
  • Delineate rock strata types and composition
  • Clays
  • Cementation
  • Grain relationships
  • Mineralogy
  • Identify sedimentary structures and texture
  • Identify deposition environments to aid
mapping, and predict reservoir geometry and
    likely areal extent
  • Determine porosity and permeability
  • Identify presence of reservoir fluids

2
Rotary core barrel
3
Coring bits are commonly 1.75 to 5.25 inches in
diameter
4
Diamond insets on rotary coring bit. The insets
may also be tungsten carbide or PDC

  • Core 3880 and 388 Assignment
  • February 18 2009
  • Final core description should be typed with two
columns Core depth, and Description (as
    indicated below).
  • 1. Describe both cores using the standard
    protocols
  • ? rock type
  • ? color
  • ? texture
  • ? fossils/trace fossils
  • ? sedimentary structures
  • ? porosity (estimate it)
  • ? oil shows
  • 2. Identify the principal depositional
environment (s) of the cored interval in both
cores. Do this by identifying the principal
facies i.e. - the distinctive rock types that
broadly correspond to a certain environment or
mode or origin (channel facies, marine bar
facies, tidal facies, open marine facies,
    turbidite facies, etc).
  • Interpret the most likely areal distribution
pattern of each reservoir facies in both cores.
Use terms like areally extensive, blanket-like,
    narrow, elongate, lobate, etc.
