  • Please join us for the 6th Annual National Career
    Clusters Institute at the Marriott Atlanta
    Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia. This year's theme is
    "Career Clusters The New Horizon." The Institute
    promises to give you more of what you are looking
    for sessions and workshops organized into
    strands designed for specific groups, with more
    hands-on breakouts. These strands include

  • Career Clusters as a Model for CollaborationThis
    strand is designed for state/regional system
    leaders of education, workforce development,
    economic development, CTE, and post secondary
    systems
  • Career Clusters as a Tool for School Reform
    ImprovementThis strand is designed for
    district/system administrators, counselors and
    general education teachers
  • Implementing the Career Clusters Model Issues
    and IdeasThis strand is designed for
    state/district administrators and teachers
  • Career Cluster-Specific Instruction and
    ImplementationThis strand designed for

CRITICAL COMPONENT 1
  • Administrative Support The superintendent,
    principal, and school board members are informed
    and understand the concept of the career
    emphasis/focus (cluster) process and its
    components.

CRITICAL COMPONENT 2
  • Shared Planning Time The teaching team has a
    schedule that allows for weekly, shared program
    planning, curriculum design, and other career
    cluster-related activities

CRITICAL COMPONENT 3
  • Career Development Parents are included in the
    career planning sessions to increase ownership of
    career-education plan.

CRITICAL COMPONENT 4
  • Professional Development All members of the
    cluster team will attend professional development
    activities related to one or more of the 15
    critical components to successfully implement the
    program.

CRITICAL COMPONENT 5
  • Standards-Based Curriculum Curriculum is
    designed to include both the career cluster
    foundation standards and appropriate academic
    standards. Curriculum enhances reinforces
    academic content and, as a result, improves both
    career content and academic achievement.

  • Parent and Community Support Parents/guardians
    are informed of the program content, participate
    in the career decision-making process, and
    support the program in various settings.
    Community groups offer program support through
    sponsorships and marketing. They assist with
    identifying workplace learning sites and building
    industry partnerships.

  • Education Partnerships Educational partnerships
    will be formalized within the region to establish
    an articulated continuum of learning for the
    career cluster program.

  • Business and Industry Partnerships Industry
    partners are representative of the entire
    spectrum of the career cluster delivery
    represented in the community.

  • Multi-Measure Assessment Assessment includes
    both cumulative and on-demand measures and meets
    criteria for multiple disciplines.

  • Interdisciplinary Teams The cluster team works
    collaboratively to offer the curriculum in an
    interdisciplinary approach. The content is
    typically designed around a common theme or
    project with a culminating activity, product, or
    service, as a result of the instruction.

  • Flexible Schedules School schedules are flexible
    and allow for interdisciplinary team-managed
    blocks of time, as needed, for projects, labs,
    and other action-based activities.

  • Integrated Curriculum The curriculum is
    developed and taught by the cluster team. The
    content is multidisciplinary and based on
    academic and career cluster foundation standards
    and taught the context of the industry. Career
    cluster content is strengthened by the
    integration of academic concepts.

  • Creative and Innovative Teaching Strategies Team
    building, critical thinking and problem-solving
    activities are incorporated into the program.
    All content is reinforced through application and
    practice.

  • Workplace Learning All students participate in
    workplace learning experiences that are in
    alignment with their career goals.

  • Student-Centered Learning Students are involved
    in the design and development of their
    coursework, based on their interests, career

    met.

  • Due Date is April 15, 2008 (extra time can be
    granted)
  • Until all program options have a Plan of Study,
    you must continue to add beyond the previous year
  • Postsecondary education is a required component
    may be with either community college or 4-year
    institution OR both
  • Dual enrollment is a value-added but not required

  • Notice core subject areas have been filled in and
    you can change electives as necessary
  • POINT Remember that all but 1 Virginia college
    requires 3 years of Foreign Language
