Title: ATRAP II: Preparing for the Future

1
ATRAP IIPreparing for the Future
  • Christopher Jones University of Iowa
  • Supervisor Dr. Cody Storry
  • 8 August 2002

2
  • Leading the Effort to Produce and Store Cold
    Antihydrogen
  • Operates Out of the Antiproton Decelerator at
    CERN

3
Why Make Antihydrogen?
  • Simplest Anti-atom
  • Spectroscopy
  • Study CPT Invariance

4
How To Make Cold Antihydrogen?
  • ATRAP uses a nested Penning trap to accumulate,
cool, and store antiprotons and positrons.

ATRAP II
  • More Space (25x Current Trap)
  • Ioffe Trap
  • Lasers
  • More Detectors
  • 3 Layers of Fiber for Tracking p-pbar
    annihilation
  • BGO and Silicon Microstrip for Tracking ee-

8
My Project Paving the Way for ATRAP II
  • There is a room set aside for the new trap,
    called Zone II.
  • It is my duty to prepare this room for the
arrival of the traps magnet in early August.

9
2 Phases of Zone II Preparation
  • Physical Room Preparation
  • Concrete Blocks
  • Painting
  • Vacuum Preparation
  • Tubes
  • Gauges
  • Valves
  • Pumps
  • Controls

10
Physical Preparation
  • Made 12 Concrete Blocks

11
Physical Preparation
  • Made 12 Concrete Blocks
  • Used Them to Build a Wall

Current Vacuum Stats
  • Vacuum of 7 x 10-7 Torr achievable in 12 hours
    pumping time.
  • No leaks greater than 2 x 10-8 mbar L s-1

19
Conclusions
  • Temporary Vacuum System Works
  • Future Work
  • Complete the System
  • Continue Leak Checking Shoot for no leaks
    greater than 10-9 mbar L s-1
  • Construct Automated Vacuum Control System
  • Situate Vacuum Controls Inside Zone
