Title: A View of the Nazi Death Camps

1
  • A View of the Nazi Death Camps
  • By Steven Yuen and Trevor Dias

2
  • The train Entrance to Birkenau, a.k.a. Auschwitz
    II.
  • This was the largest Nazi camp during World War II

3
  • The train entrance to Birkenau, as it would look
    today

4
  • The Camps were usually very large and contained
many entrances and housing. This is another
entrance to Birkenau, as we would see it today

5
  • After the Jews arrived at the camps, they were
marched through halls of wires like these

6
  • Many of the Jews were stripped of their clothes
and belongings when they first entered the camps.
This photo shows what they looked like after
spending time in the hands of the Nazis

7
  • These steps led up to the Mauthausen camp.
Inmates had to carry giant blocks of stone up the
flight of stairs and the steps earned the name,
  • The Stairway of Death

8
  • The inmates at the Nazi death camps spent their
nights in these quarters with many fellow inmates

9
  • This is what it looked like with many people
crammed tightly into a small bed

10
  • Every morning Jews had to wake up and line up, to
    be checked during roll call

11
  • According to ex-prisoners, the Nazis tried their
very best to strike fear in the hearts of all the
inmates. They even gave the walls of their camps
a somewhat dreadful look and feeling

12
  • Within the camps, the Nazis preformed many
strange medical experiments. Pictured above is a
    dissecting table at Auschwitz

13
  • After the cruel experiments, and the deaths of
inmates, Nazis would place the corpses in
    furnaces, much like this one

14
  • Even though the Nazis cremated bodies to save
space, the ashes of inmates continued to pile up.
Here is a pond outside of Birkenau today.
During the Holocaust, ashes were dumped in this
    area

15
  • This is a birds-eye view of Auschwitz and its
    sub-camps

NEVER FORGET
  • By the end of 1943 the Germans closed down the
death camps built specifically to exterminate
Jews. The death tolls for the camps are as
    follows Treblinka, (750,000 Jews) Belzec,
(550,000 Jews) Sobibór, (200,000 Jews) Chelmno,
(150,000 Jews) and Lublin (also called Majdanek,
50,000 Jews). Auschwitz continued to operate
through the summer of 1944 its final death total
was about 1 million Jews and 1 million non-Jews.
Allied encirclement of Germany was nearly
complete in the fall of 1944. The Nazis began
dismantling the camps, hoping to cover up their
crimes. By the late winter/early spring of 1945,
they sent prisoners walking to camps in central
Germany. Thousands died in what became known as
    death marches.
