Title: Exterior Elevations

1
Exterior Elevations
  • Elevation Views represent the two-dimensional
views of each side of a house.
  • There are six orthographic views of a house but
architects only use four views. The four views
are the Front, Rear, Right and Left.
  • When creating the elevations using conventional
drafting equipment the architect will project
each view from the floor plan.

2
Exterior Elevations
  • Elevations can also be created by using an
architects scale and not projecting from the
    floor plan.
  • On 2D CAD programs the elevations can be
projected from the floor plan and then rotated
    into position.

Auxiliary Elevations
  • When features of a house do not line up with one
of the principal orthographic views then it is
necessary to create an auxiliary projection.

Roof Terminology
  • Pitch is the ratio between the horizontal run and
the vertical rise of the roof.
  • Run is the horizontal distance and is always
    expressed in units of 12.

6
Roof Terminology
  • Slope Rise/Run
  • Pitch Rise/Span
  • Span is the Run doubled.
  • Place the Rise over the Span (24)
  • Span is the distance between the supports of the
    roof.
  • If the Run is 12 then the Span is 24
  • However, architects express the Pitch of a roof
as Rise/Run with Run always 12 units.

7
Roof Terminology
  • The common term is to list the roof slope as a
5/12 Pitch. The symbol is also referred to as a
    slope diagram.

8
Roof Terminology
  • The angle of a roof pitch is the inverse tangent
of the slope. Slope is the Rise over the Run.
  • If the Slope is
  • 8/12 then 8/12.66
  • -Tan .66 33.69 degrees.

  • Tags can be placed on elevation views of windows
to identify them in the Window Schedule

Interior Elevations
  • Interior Elevations are used to show the detail
    of the interior walls.

Elevation Dimensioning
  • Show the vertical distances from a datum
  • The datum line is a reference that remains
constant. Sea level is commonly used as the
datum however any line can be used as a datum
reference. For example, the grade can be used as
    a datum.
  • Elevation dimensions show the distance from the
floor line to the ceiling and roof ridge and eave
lines, and to the top of chimneys, doors, and
    windows.
  • Distances below grade are shown as dashed lines.

Elevation Dimensioning
  • Check your book, pages 317 to 318 for correct
    dimensioning techniques for an elevation.
