EVALUATING WEBSITES
2
Internet Research
  • Your Goal
  • Find credible websites
  • Find websites without bias

3
Credibility
  • A website may look professional and NOT be
    professional.
  • Who created it?
  • What is their background?
  • Who sponsors the site?

4
Bias
  • Why does the website exist?
  • Is someone simply trying to prove a point?
  • Is someone selling something?

5
Other Considerations
  • Is the material up-to-date?
  • Who runs the site?
  • Can they be contacted?
  • Are there advertisements?
  • Easy to navigate.
  • Links to other websites, other resources

6
Remember
  • Information may be used to make political points.
  • People on all sides feel passionate
  • May cause them to distort information or mislead.

7
UNIT ONE
  • SPHERES OF THE EARTH

8
Studying the Earth
  • Study parts of the earth (called spheres) and how
    they interact.
  • There are 4 spheres
  • Lithosphere
  • Atmosphere
  • Hydrosphere
  • Biosphere

9
Lithosphere
  • Contains
  • Solid rock of the earths crust (surface)
  • Semisolid and liquid rock underneath
  • Solid iron core in the middle
  • Even beneath the water, there is oceanic crust
    and other layers below.

10
Atmosphere
  • Gaseous layer made up of a mixture of gases.
  • Includes nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and
    water vapor.
  • Oxygen and carbon dioxide are important for life.

11
Hydrosphere
  • Includes ALL of the water on earth
  • On the surface (lakes, rivers, oceans, ponds)
  • Underground
  • In ice caps
  • In the atmosphere
  • 71 of the earth is covered by water!

12
Biosphere
  • Includes all life on earth
  • Animals
  • Plants
  • Fungi
  • Bacteria

13
Interactions
  • The spheres are not isolated
  • Each sphere interacts and affects others.
  • Natural events also impact the spheres.
