Not what they expected
Jesus
  • 46After three days they found him in the temple
courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to
them and asking them questions. 47Everyone who
heard him was amazed at his understanding and his
answers. 48When his parents saw him, they were
astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why
have you treated us like this? Your father and I
have been anxiously searching for you."
  • 49"Why were you searching for me?" he asked.
"Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's
house?" 50But they did not understand what he was
    saying to them.

Who What
Jesus
  • Jewish People
  • "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the
prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I
have longed to gather your children together, as
a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you
    were not willing. Luke

Who What
Jesus
  • The Powerful
  • "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees,
you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,
which look beautiful on the outside but on the
inside are full of dead men's bones and
    everything unclean. Matthew 2327

Who What
Jesus
  • The Outcasts
  • 7When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus
said to her, "Will you give me a drink?" 8(His
disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
  • 9The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew
and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me
for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with
    Samaritans.)
  • 10Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of
God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you
would have asked him and he would have given you
    living water."

11
Who What
Jesus
  • 11"Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to
draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get
this living water? 12Are you greater than our
father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from
it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks
    and herds?"
  • 13Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this
water will be thirsty again, 14but whoever drinks
the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed,
the water I give him will become in him a spring
of water welling up to eternal life." John

Who What
Jesus
  • The Wealthy
  • 17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to
him and fell on his knees before him. "Good
teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit
    eternal life?"
  • 18"Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No
one is goodexcept God alone. 19You know the
commandments 'Do not murder, do not commit
adultery, do not steal, do not give false
testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and
    mother.'d"
  • 20"Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept
    since I was a boy."
  • 21Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing
you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have
and give to the poor, and you will have treasure
in heaven. Then come, follow me."
  • 22At this the man's face fell. He went away sad,
    because he had great wealth.

13
Who What
Jesus
  • 23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,
"How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom
    of God!"
  • 24The disciples were amazed at his words. But
Jesus said again, "Children, how hard it is to
enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a
camel to go through the eye of a needle than for
a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
  • 26The disciples were even more amazed, and said
to each other, "Who then can be saved?"
  • 27Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this
is impossible, but not with God all things are
    possible with God.
    Mark 1017-27

Who What
Jesus
  • The Poor
  • 1As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting
their gifts into the temple treasury. 2He also
saw a poor widow put in two very small copper
coins. 3"I tell you the truth," he said, "this
poor widow has put in more than all the others.
4All these people gave their gifts out of their
wealth but she out of her poverty put in all she
    had to live on.
    Luke 211-4

15
Who What
Jesus
  • The Seeker
  • 9"So I say to you Ask and it will be given to
you seek and you will find knock and the door
will be opened to you. 10For everyone who asks
receives he who seeks finds and to him who
knocks, the door will be opened.

  • Luke 119-10
  • 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through
faithand this not from yourselves, it is the
gift of God 9not by works, so that no one can
    boast. Eph 28-9

Who What
Jesus
  • The Sinner
  • 3The teachers of the law and the Pharisees
brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made
her stand before the group 4and said to Jesus,
"Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of
adultery. 5In the Law Moses commanded us to stone
such women. Now what do you say?" 6They were
using this question as a trap, in order to have a
    basis for accusing him.
  • But Jesus bent down and started to write on
the ground with his finger. 7When they kept on
questioning him, he straightened up and said to
them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him
be the first to throw a stone at her." 8Again he
stooped down and wrote on the ground.

17
Who What
Jesus
  • 9At this, those who heard began to go away one at
a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus
was left, with the woman still standing there.
10Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman,
where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
  • 11"No one, sir," she said.
  • "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus
declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin.

  • His Followers
  • 37With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.
  • 38The curtain of the temple was torn in two from
    top to bottom.
    Mark 1537-38
  • Yet a time is coming and has now come when the
true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit
and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers
    the Father seeks.
