- Terms used for certain subjects or topics
- provide consistency
- helps the searcher to be more precise

- Think of all the different words to describe a
four wheeled, motorized vehicle use to transport
people and goods on roads. - Car, auto, automobile, station wagons, van, SUV,
Chevy, truck.. - Term Automobile would retrieve articles that used
the various terms
8CINAHL Headings
- About 70 of the CINAHL headings were adopted
from MeSH used in MEDLINE - Additional nursing specific subject headings were
added. i.e.) Surgical Nursing
9What is a Keyword?
- keywords are the everyday language terms
- using keywords searches words found in the
title/abstract/text of the articles - returns greatest amount of results, but with low
relevancy - use when terms do not map to CINAHL headings

- AND is exclusive must have both terms
- OR is inclusive- must have either idea

- 1. Write down your search as a sentence. and note
the main concepts/keywords e.g. - I need to find information on female nurse
burnout and costs to the health care system in
Canada and the United States. - 2. List the terms that related to your concepts.
Consult the Thesaurus/Subject Headings if
available. - 3. Think about how the terms could be connected
(AND, OR, NOT)

Repeat the search, but only use keywords. This

In this case, we get fewer results then when
searching with Subject Terms
