  • The UCBSA is a product of the process of
    democratisation.
  • UCBSAs goal is to contribute to the task of
    nation-building in society.
  • We welcome the opportunity to engage
    with the Parliamentary Portfolio
    Committee on Sport.

  • UCBs 10th anniversary of unity in 2001.
  • 1998 - UCBs transformation charter and pledge to
    the nation.
  • 1999 - the broad target of 50/50
    representation at all levels of cricket
    by the World Cup 2003 was set.

  • 2.2 World Cup 2003
  • The challenge now is to continue with this
    process of transformation in all areas of
    cricket.
  • The World Cup is a one-off opportunity for
  • cricket, working closely with government
  • and other stakeholders, to ensure
  • maximum success for Team South Africa.

  • That the Amateur Cricket Arm of the UCBSA becomes
  • the epitome of a world class organisation
    excellence.

  • To raise the profile of all the components of
  • Amateur cricket in South Africa through
  • efficient and effective delivery service.

AMATEUR CRICKET
  • 3.1 Amateur Cricket Programme
  • 60 000 children are introduced into cricket every
    year through Bakers Mini Cricket - this programme
    was started in 1982.
  • The Bakers Coaches Academy also provides
    training for coaches at all levels. This
    includes bursaries which are given to
    Bakers Academy coaches of all levels.

AMATEUR CRICKET
  • Since 1995 the UCB/PPC project has created 742
    new cricket facilities.
  • The MTN Schools project has presently 223
    schools, majority of which are township schools,
    benefiting from this project.
  • UCB runs 11 youth tournaments on an
    annual basis - which cater for the
    best young cricketers throughout
    the country.

  • The Plascon Academy trains 20 top candidates per
    season. This year 10 of these players were from
    previously disadvantaged communities.
    All candidates are chosen on merit.
  • In Partnership with Standard Bank, and
    Government, steps are being taken to
    support clubs with facilities and coaching.

  • The UCBSA has distributed monies from Government
    to 34 disadvantaged clubs nationally.
  • Women's cricket is being systematically revived
    in South Africa with the total number of players
    being about 9000. This includes 1104 schools
    and 269 clubs.

  • The UCBSA has recently included a policy to
    provide formal coaching and facilities for the
    deaf, blind and intellectually impaired.
  • Although this is a recent policy, Bakers Mini
    Cricket has been played by these differently
    abled communities for many years.

  • Cricket Development in Africa started in 1997.
  • Hoosain Ayob of South Africa was appointed by the
    ICC to drive the cricket development process into
    Africa. He is based at the UCB office and is
    targeting 14 African countries.
  • Since 1994 the UCB has assisted the
    development of cricket in Kenya, Uganda,
    Zimbabwe and Botswana by providing
    equipment and coaching.

  • 3.2 International Participation
  • The UCBSA participates in the All Africa
    Cricket Tournament together with Namibia,
    Zambia, Lesotho, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Kenya,
    Tanzania, Botswana and Uganda. We hosted the
    tournament in 1996.

  • International Participation continued
  • MTN u19 Cricket World Cup
  • South Africa hosted this event in 1998, with 16
  • countries participating. Township venues were
    used for
  • the first round and plate league matches
  • taking international cricket to all
  • communities of South Africa.

  • 3.3 National players
  • All the national players have worked their way
  • through the various levels of the Amateur
    Cricket
  • programme to make it into the Protea Cricket
    Side.
  • To follow are some examples of national
  • players cricket careers, namely
  • Boeta Dippenaar, Justin Ontong,
  • Makhaya Ntini and Mark Boucher.
