  • Born June 3 1904 in Washington DC
  • Received strong moral development from parents,
    Richard and Nora.
  • Excelled at many sports
  • At first his grades were not better than
    average, however by 1922 he graduated with high
    honors from Dunbar High School.

    blood storage.

Part 3 Research until Death
  • In 1934 after 4 years in Canada, Dr Drew returned
    to Washington D.C and took a position at Howard
    University.
  • In 1938 Dr. Drew was given a 2 year fellowship at
    Colombia University to continue his research.
  • His Doctoral studies focused on the problem of
    blood storage.

  • In 1939 Dr. Drew had invented a way to preserve
    blood plasma, by dehydrating it.
  • While WWII raged on in Europe, Dr. Drew was made
    the 1st director of the American Red Cross Blood
    Bank.
  • Dr. Drew also directed the Blood for Britain
    program which saved thousands of lives in WWII.

  • In 1943 Dr. Drew was the 1st Black Surgeon in the
    American Board of Surgeons.
  • He also received recognition from the NAACP.
  • On March 31 1950 Dr. Drew died in a car accident
    while on his way to a medical conference in
    Alabama.
  • He was married to a woman named Lenore and they
    had 4 children.
