What do AMS-IX customers want ?
  • (Lots of) Peers
  • Market conform prices
  • Reliability
  • Visibility
  • Transparency
  • Continuity

7
Future (services) at AMS-IX
  • ENUM / SIP / VoIP
  • Streaming content distribution
  • Cut through switching
  • 100 Gb Ethernet standard ?

8
ENUM (some background)
  • Consensus reached at previous GM
  • Initiate discussions
  • Investigate options
  • Facilitate processes
  • Define a role for AMS-IX

9
ENUM (where we stand today)
  • A couple of interest meetings were held with
    different stakeholders
  • Market research gave better insight in drivers at
    different levels
  • A tentative joint effort for the official Dutch
ENUM delegation between SIDN (.nl), COIN and
    AMS-IX is under discussion

10
SIP / VoIP
  • Several SIP initiatives
  • Neustar is about to start their SIP-IX trial
  • JCC (Joint Cable Consortium) has created a SIP
    CUG on a separate VLAN
  • We hear rumors about more initiatives
  • All initiatives are welcome and supported!

11
Streaming content distribution...why did we go
there?
  • Request of several members to do something
about the stale-mate situation around streaming
  • Request by market-parties as neutral party to
facilitate a place to get together and discuss
  • Several developments around exchanges abroad

12
Developments abroad
  • Sweden
  • Netnod largest .SE exchange has set-up a joint
    services exchange (testbed)
  • Multicast only
  • Several parties including government, end-users,
    ISPs broadcasters
  • UK
  • TVLinx initiator BBC has facilitated a
multicast environment for access providers to use
  • US
  • Media exchanges are under development
  • Combination of Multicast Unicast VLANS around
    exchanges

13
State of affairs AMS-IX
  • No dedicated environment
  • A lot of streaming traffic over the (unicast)
    Peering LAN (survey 20)
  • Streaming traffic is the largest grower of all
    categories (survey 80)
  • Multicast VLAN
  • 12 parties
  • Very little traffic

14
Goal of the session(s)
  • Catalyst for Internet developments
  • Increase the value of the exchange for its
    members
  • Clarify the potential role for AMS-IX in the
    streaming developments

15
Outcome of the first session
  • Parties appreciate a neutral environment to get
    together and discuss
  • The issue(s) need(s) to be clearly identified
  • AMS-IX is requested to facilitate a Working Group
    on the subject
  • WG-video open to all stakeholders incl.
    non-members
  • First action is to determine a clear problem
    statement
  • Second is to inventory all facets and propose
    solutions including existing operational
    environments and concepts
  • Potentially leading to prototyping

16
Cut through switching
  • We have 4 edge locations
  • We operate a (dual) star topology
  • 85 of total traffic traverses the core
  • We conclude that most local traffic is dealt with
    through private interconnects
  • We are investigating ways of implementing this
    technique at AMS-IX

17
100 Gb Ethernet standard ?
  • We have 4 members with 20 Gb trunks
  • These members will likely upgrade to 40 Gb soon
  • On the backbone we already have 80 Gb trunks, so
we need higher speed interfaces and standards
    asap
  • We actively participate in the Ethernet alliance
    to discuss higher speeds
