3IT MAINTENANCE MANAGEMENT
An IT Maintenance Strategy The maintenance
strategy should isolate users as much as possible
from service disruptions and system changes.
The proper maintenance of hardware, software,
communications, and data is essential to assure
smooth operations.

- Corrective Maintenance Procedures
Step 1 Fully document problem.
Step 2 Attempt to duplicate failure conditions.
Step 3 Isolate cause of problem.
Step 4 Resolve problem, if possible.
Step 5 If problem unresolved, contact appropriate vendor
Step 6 Apply vendors fix to problem
Step 7 Document all changes

SOFTWARE Some IBM
Software Maintenance Terminology
Program Temporary Fix The patch supplied by IBM
to remedy a (PTF) problem. This must be applied
by the systems programmers. Authorized
Program a) request by a user to have a problem
resolved Analysis report (APAR) b) a patch
similar to a PTF, usually not quite as
complex, that fixes the problem. Program Update
Tape A magnetic tape containing all of the fixes
(PUT) applicable to a given operating system
for a specific period of time (usually a
month). System Modification A software program
written by IBM to apply Program (SMF) all
software maintenance to the system
(MVS). Installation Productivity Interactive
product that assists the systems Option
(IPO) programmer in installing an operating
system

SOFTWARE Methods of Conversion to New systems
Method Description
Direct Conversion New system is implemented and previous system is immediately disabled.
Modular Conversion Old system is slowly replaced on module-by-module basis.
Parallel Conversion Both systems are run simultaneously and the results compared. Old system is removed only after correctness has been verified for some period of time.
