Title: INTRODUCTION TO MOBILE CARTS in the Classroom

1
INTRODUCTIONTO MOBILE CARTSin the Classroom
  • St. Thomas More School
  • San Francisco
  • California

2
The Mobile Carts
  • Check-out Procedure
  • Whenever a teacher would like to use the laptops
in the classroom they need to be signed out. The
sign out book is in the Conference Room.
  • Please record the time and grade level in the
    book.

3
Charging the Carts
  • The charging capacity is divided into left and
    right hand side.
  • The carts must be plugged in from the two cords
at the back of the cart.
  • The red on button at the bottom of the cart
must be lit up when charging.

4
Charging responsibilities
  • The Technology Coordinator will ensure supervise
charging by the S.W.A.T. Team members who last
use the laptops for the day.
  • The S.W.A.T Team members for Grades 2-8 must
    ensure
  • 1. All laptops are returned to the proper carts
  • 1-20 (Downstairs)
  • 21-40 (Upstairs)
  • 2. All laptops are neatly put away and charged.
    (orange lights on)
  • All laptops need to be charging when not in use.

5
Security
  • All Carts are pad-locked over night.
  • Any damage to a laptop needs to be reported to
    the Technology Coordinator immediately.
  • Remote Desktop may be used by the Technology
Coordinator to ensure students use the laptops
appropriately. This allows immediate access to
    anyone screen during any lesson.
  • Inappropriate use of the laptops will result in
losing the privilege of using the laptops.

6
Logging In
  • 3 User Log-ins have been set up
  • Admin, teachers, and students.
  • Students will always login as STUDENT with the
    general password.
  • If the Admin. Login is required, care should be
made not to reveal the Admin. Password.
  • The Students login gains a restricted access to
    programs and privileges.
  • iTunes, Chat etc., should be disabled in the
Student login. Please notify the Tech.
    Coordinator if they are not.

7
Supervision
  • While in use Classroom teachers are responsible
    to supervise online activity.
  • Please ensure that students are focused
    particularly while searching keywords online.
  • S.W.A.T. team members in each classroom will
    assist students with troubleshooting issues.

8
Operations Get started
  • Unplugging and turning on
  • An iBook which has been totally drained of power
takes forever to boot. So long a wait until a
response is seen makes everyone think the machine
is broken. Be patient. Check the battery level by
pressing the round white button on the corner of
the battery on the bottom of the laptop.

9
The Server
  • Students should log onto their Server at the
beginning of the lesson. This avoids last minute
scramble at the end of the lesson.
  • The User Name is the first and last name of the
student and the Password is a pre-assigned 4
    letter word.
  • All work by students needs to be saved on the
Server. No documents are to be saved on the
hard-drive of the computers. (Except for teachers
    who have their own laptops)

10
The Dock
  • OSX The Operating 10 System uses the Dock to
display commonly used Programs. Currently we have
the following Programs available to students
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, KidPix, Wordbook, World
    Atlas, Internet Explorer, Dream weaver,
    Photoshop, Mario Teaches Typing,

11
The Laptops
  • All laptops use a track pad. Roll a fingertip
over the track pad to get fine control of the
    cursor.
  • An external mouse is available for students who
are having difficulty controlling the cursor this
    way.
  • Students will need a lot of practice in using the
    track pad.

12
Some Tips
  • Eject button ? how to use It would be nice if we
could disable the CD eject button for school use.
We removed the orange sticker that says "press
F12 to eject disk." IMHO, if you need to but a
sticker on the computer to tell people how to do
    something, that's counterintuitive design.
  • Numeric keypad You may never need to use the
built-in numeric keypad, but if your computer
starts typing funny and puts lots of numbers
instead of letters, press F6 to turn that off.

13
Operations handy tips
  • If the Laptop does not start
  • Check battery level Press the button on the
bottom. Don't check out with 2 dots or less. Have
some power supplies ready to pull out of the cart
if necessary. These laptops will not last a full
    day on batteries alone.
  • Plug in the laptop and press the On/Off button
    again.
  • Return to the Tech. Coordinator for further
    investigation

14
Laptop Status
  • Sleep between classes, after activity completed
    Charge whenever you can.
  • Shut down after last class of the day If the
cart gets unplugged, all the laptops will
eventually drain dead if they are sleeping.
  • Pulsing light on the edge means the laptop is
    asleep.

15
Internet Surfing
Internet browsers used are Internet Explorer and
Safari. Safari allows you to block
pop-ups. Printing Web Pages Don't. That's a
black hole for ink. Besides, students should be
taking notes, not copying whole swatches of
text. The Tech. Coordinator will help you find
suitable websites for topics being studied.
Students below 6th grade rarely have the skills
needed to find relevant sites. These skills need
to be taught to your class.
16
If you cannot connect to the Internet
  • First try turning off and on the wireless
connection. (The black rainbow in the top menu)
  • Check that you are connected to our schools
    Network STTSchool
  • If no computers connect to the Internet, the
Tech. Coordinator will need to re-boot the router.

17
Printing
  • All Laptops are configured to print both
    downstairs and upstairs.
  • UPSTAIRS Printer Elvis
  • DOWNSTAIRS Printer Big Bob
  • If a Printer is not listed, please return the
    laptop to the Tech. Coordinator.
  • Please teach your students how to print Pages 1-1
    and conserve paper.

18
First Steps for Students
  • Here's a short list of things to review with your
students when first using the carts. Take about
15 minutes to go over the following items.
  • Logging in Reveal the password and remind them
that the laptops are a privilege and must be used
    appropriately.
  • Track pad control Practice using the track pad
    to control the mouse.

19
First Steps for Students cont.,
  • Checking battery Lights on the bottom.
  • Copy, Paste, Cut Apple C, Apple V, Apple X
  • Make sure AirPort is connected look at control
strip lights or AirPort control panel if they're
both disabled, is there another way to check? I
don't want to unlock control panel access. The
best solution is to restrict the functions on the
    control strip.

20
Tips for Students
  • Use the BLUE apple and Shutdown to shutdown your
    laptop.
  • Review the icons on the Dock so students are
familiar with the commonly used Programs.
  • Force Quit Option-Apple-Escape.
  • Use this whenever you see the spinning beach
    ball.

21
More Tips for Students
  • Screen grab "Shift-Apple-control-4" and then
draw a box The results are on the Desktop.
  • Saving All files need to be saved on the Server.
  • Virtual Teacher Drop Box An easy way for
students to pass up work is through your Drop
Box. Log onto Server gt Choose Users gtFind the
Teachers name gtChoose Public Folder gtDrop Box.

Why do students want to be on SWAT?
  • We help other students with computers.
  • To improve our knowledge and help with
    technology.
  • To help teachers with computers.
  • To help students and teachers with technology.

27
The Ways SWAT Helps
  • Mentors for students and teachers are developed.
  • Teachers have an instant backup system if
    problems occur.
  • Routine jobs like cleaning, printer maintenance
    etc., are regularly completed.

28
Tech Troopers
  • Tech troopers help ease the life of a teacher.
  • Cleaning computers is just one more thing to
make a day of teaching busier.
  • They also charge computers, add paper to
printers, update software, train other students
in the careful use of computers.

29
Internet Researchers
  • The Internet researchers look for certain topics
that teachers give them to look up information
for their class. They provide teachers with
appropriate links for research topics. These
students also work closely with the Web page
    builders.

30
Computer Buddies
  • The Computer Buddies go out to classes to help
children learn new programs and games. They
particularly work with K-2 classes if teachers
    request their help.
  • Computer Buddies also train students in using new
programs and software during SWAT team meetings.

31
Web Page Builders
  • The SWAT has started working on making web pages
for the teachers. We are using Dream weaver. If
teachers want spelling lists posted, field trip
photos uploaded etc., the Class SWAT Team are
responsible to maintain the class page they are
    assigned.

32
Public Relations
  • SWAT Team Members also
  • Develop presentations for Faculty meetings,
  • Work on the Year Book,
  • Design flyers for various school events,
  • Use the digital camera to take photos of class
    activities
  • Write up articles for the weekly Tech.
    Newsletter.
