Slow Darkening Trait
White Mountain Pinto Beans
  • The trait was developed by the CDC.
  • Released exclusively to Walker Seeds.
  • No other Pinto Bean has this unique trait.
  • Holds its fresh white color much longer then all
    other Pinto Bean varieties.
  • Slow Darkening trait has provide a 0.02-0.04/lb
price premium to growers over traditional Pinto
    varieties the past two years.

3
As you can see in the three photos. The Pinto
Beans on the right gradually get darker and
darker in color with time. A very undesirable
trait in Pinto Beans and is why the Slow
Darkening variety is now preferred by consumers.

Consuming Markets
  • Both the Mexican and USA markets consume
approximately 550,000-600,000 tons of Pinto Beans
per year. Making Pinto Beans the most consumed
Bean in the NAFTA region. Also the most liquid of
all dry edible beans with constant demand that is
    not affected by seasonal preferences.
  • Pinto Bean consumption is estimated at 220,000
tons per year in Mexico alone. Mexico imports
nearly 100,000 tons of dry edible beans every
year. Black and Pinto beans are the two main
    varieties consumed and imported.
  • The USA consumes close to 350,000 tons of Pinto
Beans per year but also produce nearly the same
amount annually. It is by far the main variety
consumed in the USA domestic market. Mindak and
North Dakota produces 80 of the USA Pinto Beans.
This product is mainly used for canning and other
    industrialized or precooked products distributed
through supermarket chains that are aimed at the
mid to lower end price markets.
  • Premium Quality Markets are another segment of
demand that asks for premium quality Pinto Beans.
Quality is defined by color and size and of these
two characteristics color would be the most
    important aspect.
  • These markets are in a defined geographical area
mainly with Hispanic populations. In the USA -
California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and
Florida. In Mexico, all of the northern and
Central states consume the majority of the Pinto
Bean in Mexico. The demand for the premium
quality Pinto Bean is more than 180,000 tons and
this market segment is the main focus of our
    White Mountain Pinto Bean program.

  • If using traditional seeding equipment beans
should be soaked for a minimum of 24 hrs prior to
seeding. Helps reduce cracking and increases
    plant count and overall health.
  • Treatment and inoculant should be applied after
    soaking.
  • Seeding Rate - 110 lbs/acre narrow row and 90
    lbs/acre wide row.
  • Rolling - should be done within 3 days of
    seeding.
  • Maturity - 1533 - 87 to 92 days.
  • Maturity - 2793 - 90 to 95 days - Limited supply
    in 2009.
  • Must be swathed to reduce cracking and splits.
Best to be combines at 18 moisture to reduce
cracking and splits then dried down with air to
