Welcome to the best club in the world!
  • At a time when other clubs are struggling to
attract members, Hellfins is one of the most
    popular clubs in London
  • We have several new members
    this last year, including
  • Six people brand-new to diving
  • Four divers with BSAC qualifications
  • Nine cross-overs from other agencies
  • Sadly some people have moved away and left the
club, but membership currently stands at 86 people

5
The club is very active socially
  • Moving to the Duke of Sussex has seen an
increase in the number of people down on
    Wednesday nights
  • There have also been over a dozen other social
    events, including
  • The Christmas party
  • Curry nights
  • Cuban nights
  • The Easter party
  • A dry dive
  • The Club Auction
  • Daves Leaving Party
  • Proms in the Park
  • Theres also been a fair bit of gossip and
intrigue, and of course an engagement!

6
The rib and compressor are working well
  • Martha is in excellent condition. Shes been out
on fourteen days this year and has also had a new
    depth sounder fitted
  • The new compressor is running well. Paul and Pete
have pumped over 280,000 litres of gas between
them. Enough air to keep a diver underwater for
    over a years!

Shell have asked for new safety procedures
  • Must be a Responsible Person present every
Wednesday night before divers enter the water
  • Minimum of Sports Diver (or equivalent) and they
    must sign the duty log
  • They must be available (ie swimming or poolside)
to help whenever divers are in the water
  • Risk Assessments have been drawn up for the pool
    and equipment (cylinders and compressor)
  • They are kept by the pool near the compressor
  • We expect the Responsible Person to have read
them this only takes five minutes
  • They are on the Hellfins website under Club
    Safety
  • The Equipment Officer and Pool Training Officer
    keep them updated
  • The Equipment Officer maintains a log of
authorised compressor operators, and only listed
    people may operate the compressor
  • A list of our Responsible People and who are pool
qualified instructors is made available to Shell
  • All Members must keep their self-cert medical
    valid with the Membership Secretary
  • Shell expect all people on site to behave
    'courteously
  • There is a Shell host for the club
  • All members must be familiar with the Shell
evacuation procedure, a copy of which (together
with these rules) will be issued to members when
they first join and annually when members renew
    their membership

9
And here is the evacuation procedure

The obligatory chart
  • Between them 66 Hellfins did 1340 dives
  • 744 in UK waters, 222 in quarries, and 374 abroad.

12
Weve been on a lot of trips this year
  • Over 40 trips to both old friends and new
    destinations
  • Good to see the rib being used
  • Also good to see new people organising trips
  • One of the most active years that I can remember

13
But weve had several incidents
  • Response to incidents have generally been
    excellent
  • Most common is rapid or uncontrolled ascents
    and missed safety stops
  • Many involved divers who recently moved up a
    grade
  • How can we improve things for next year?
  • Dont rush things. Build up experience gradually
  • Responsibility of Dive Managers to ensure divers
    have suitable recent experience
  • Individual divers must also take responsibility
for their own actions. Make things easier for the
Dive Manager. Dont book on trips youre not fit
    for
  • When diving with new equipment, especially a new
drysuit or a new cylinder configuration, take
    things easy
  • No strict rules, but I would expect most people
to have at least six dives in a new drysuit
before booking on a trip to 30m
  • Remember its meant to be fun!

14
We also need to develop our instructors
  • Id encourage new Sports Divers to attend the IFC
  • For assistant instructors to take the OWIC, PIE,
    and TIE
  • And for qualified instructors to not stand still
  • Advanced Instructor?
  • Approved SDC Instructor?
  • Boat-handling Instructor?
  • Perhaps even Instructor Trainer?
  • Potential for a Hellfins IFC

PIE
Open Water Instructor
Advanced Instructor
15
What about the future?
  • Id like to thank everyone whos made the diving
possible, both in 2007-08, and in 2008-09
