Title: Continuation proposal for: Archival backup and digital accessibility of historical Alaska and West C
1Continuation proposal for Archival backup and
digital accessibility of historical Alaska and
West Coast groundfish survey data.
- Task Lead Guy Fleischer
- Co-Investigators Robin Harrison and Nancy
Roberson - NMFS Alaska Fisheries Science Center
2AFSC Groundfish Task conducts annual trawl
surveys in the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, Gulf
of Alaska
- The survey data are important because
-
- they represent an important historical fisheries
research data time series - they are the definitive master data source for
the recorded observations from our field work - are an essential component of the North Pacific
Fisheries Management Councils groundfish stock
assessments
3FYO8
We were granted CDMP funds to create digital
copies of the original data sheets that were
archived from our groundfish surveys
4FYO8 WHAT WE ACCOMPLISHED
160 boxes of data inventoried, documented, packed
and shipped 27 boxes of data scanned into
pdfs by contractors All data from 1999-2006
Bering Sea digitized We created a quality
reviewing system for returning data Researched
web based document management tools The FY08
CDMP funding was used up in about six month's
time
5FYO8 ACCOMPLISHMENTSWhat do they mean?
- Data delivery to the contractors is essentially
complete - About 25 of our data are digitized
- 10 of the scanned datasheets are now available
on a common drive for Center use - To finish this project, 120 boxes of data forms
need to be digitized - We are requesting increased funding for FY09
this would allow us to complete 75 or more of
the total project at this years rate of data
digitizing.
6Work Proposed for FY09
DIGITIZE 2009 (80 boxes of data forms)
2010 (40 boxes)
INVESTIGATE a web based system for organizing,
searching and accessing the completed pdfs
