Shaping Americas FutureThe Coming of Age of
Native-Born Latinos Foretell an American
Revolution
  • Hispanic Americans are
  • Not just the largest ethnic group in the United
States-they may well be the most dynamic, vital
    force shaping Americas future.
  • Younger than other groups and rapidly gaining
economic and political clout, U.S. Latinos are a
vibrant mix of immigrants and families
    encompassing several U.S.-born generation.
  • The largest group, behind non-Hispanic whites, in
the labor force of an entrepreneurial bent that
is fueling the U.S. economic engine and
projected to account for 46 percent of total U.S.
population growth over the next two decades.
  • Exerting an ever-increasing influence on American
media, music, fashion and cuisine, Hispanics are
themselves in flux, retaining much of their
cultural heritage as they adopt American
political and philosophical views and behaviors.

Shaping Americas Future
  • The key to Hispanic American influence might
well lie not in the constant stream of
immigration, but in the coming of age of the
second and third generations that will swell the
ranks of U.S. Latinos in coming decades. Young,
U.S.-born and educated, are primarily English
speakers, Hispanics are poised to bring about the
next American social and cultural revolution.
Heres what the latest numbers say about this
    dynamic sector.

The Latest Data in Hispanic America
  • The U.S. Hispanic population more than doubled
between 1980 and 2000, accounting for 38 of
total U.S. population growth, and is expected to
account for 46 of total U.S. population growth
over the next 2 decades. (Pew Hispanic Center
    Report Trends 2005)
  • Births to Hispanic immigrants, rather than
immigration itself, will be the key source of
this growth by 2010, Hispanic Americans are
projected to number 47.7 million, a number that
will swell to 60.4 million by 2020.

Dynamic Trends Language
  • U.S. Hispanics are the fifth-largest
Spanish-Speaking community in the world behind,
Mexico, Spain, Columbia and Argentina. But the
reality is that Latinos are often just as
comfortable in English as in Spanish.
  • Research shows that with population growth being
driven by a high birth rate rather than
immigration, U.S. Hispanics will become primarily
    English speakers.
  • In fact, according to the Pew Hispanic Center,
75 of Latino adults today are either
    English-dominant or bilingual.
  • Language also plays a central role in defining
    identity and attitudes, with English-dominant
Hispanics expressing views more similar to the
general U.S. population than their foreign-born
    counterparts.
