The aims of the course are
  • to study aspects of child growth and development
    and use this information to design learning
    experiences for young children.
  • to learn how to apply principles of curriculum
    design and development to the primary classroom.
  • to learn how environmental settings and social
    relationships support the interactive nature of
    learning.

  • UNIT 1
  • Familiarize you with the physical, social,
    emotional, and cognitive characteristics of the
    young child from ages 4 to 8 and their
    implications to teaching.
  • Acquaint you with the principles of learning and
    development that apply to the young child.

    issues in primary education.
  • Familiarize you with subject-specific teaching
    methodologies that are appropriate for young

METHODOLOGY
  • The course will consist of a combination of
    teaching methodologies, including whole class
    lectures, small group discussions and
    assignments, individual tasks and presentations.

METHODOLOGY
  • Written instructions for the activities and
    assignments for this Primary course are included
    in the outlines provided by the various
    instructors in the course. Some of the work will
    be completed in class time, using resources found
    in the classroom, in the library or on the
    internet. Some will be completed as out of class
    assignments.

METHODOLOGY
  • Part of the course time will be spent in a
    primary classroom, observing the teacher and the
    children. This practicum will take place from
    Monday, May 25- Friday, May 29. Each candidate is
    encouraged to complete some planning and do some
    teaching during this practicum.

  • The sponsor teacher will be asked to complete a
    form to confirm that you attended for the 5 days
    and to make comments in the areas of observation,
    planning, teaching and general comments on your
    interaction with students.
  • Please insure that you return this form to the
    course director by June 3 so that we can inform
    the college of teachers that you have completed
    the course.

MAJOR COURSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Attendance at a minimum of 80 of the course
    hours.
  • Twenty five (25) hours of observation/teaching in
    a primary classroom of your choice.
  • In-class and out-of-class tasks as assigned by
    each of the instructors in the course.
