7What does it look like?
8Northern Ireland vs. The rest of the Island
- Ireland was originally under UK control
- 26 (southern) counties gained independence in
1921 (guerilla warfare) - 6 (northern) countiesthe Ulster regiondid not
fight for independence - Remains under UK control
- Considered Northern Ireland
- This separation has remained futile
- Most recent attempt to unify entire country
(British and Irish) in 2006St. Andrews Agreement
9What is this IRA that we hear so much about?
- Either an Individual Retirement Account
- OR
- Irish Republican Army
- The IRA is based in Dublin and is most notably
known as the group that fought for independence
from the UK in 1916 - This group still exists, but is NOT the Irish
Military - This group exists as the Irish Army (of the Irish
Defence Forces) and is in some ways opposed by
IRA due to disagreement with treaty
10Bottom line
- IRA fought for independence, which they claimed
in 1919 - The Army was formed in 1922
- Both still exist
- The IRA still disagrees with association with
Britain - Irelands Civil War followed the War for
Independence, and while it is dated 1922-1923,
its effects still continue today
