Digital Collections
The Collection The mission of the Slide
Collection is to support the instructional needs
of courses Taught by the Art Department faculty,
with visual images in a slide format needed for
lectures and study. The Collection holds
approximately 200,000 slides, and presently,
around 44,000 records (for slides themselves)
have now been entered into FileMaker Pro 6. The
database is still under construction and its use
is limited for the Curators use.
Goals of the Project Make a proposal to create a
system for -increased access an electronic
search tool to make access to a physical slide
easier -preserving fragile slides and
-supplementing existing physical slides by
digitizing them to expand use (e.g., use of
digital images for PowerPoint presentation).
Recommendations
Digitization For archival quality images 2400
dpi in TIFF. For database use 300 dpi in JPEG
Why Should We Create Digital Collections? Current
ly, all functions are handled manually. Clients
research origin and history of the images to help
them pinpoint where in the collection they might
be. Being able to search the collection
electronically would expedite finding images.
Browsing for related items by subject heading
would be possible.
Metadata/Taxonomy for Database Creation Follow
standards. Development of OCLC-like
shared-cataloging utility for visual resources is
likely happen. Develop in-house metadata scheme
based on Dublin Core, VRA Core.Use standardized
vocabulary such as Art and Architecture
Thesaurus, Categories for the Description of
Works of Art, Thesaurus for Geographic Materials,
Thesaurus of Geographic Names, Union List of
Artists Names.
Software/System for Database Creation Seeking
for easy-to-use collections management system
with image control capability, following two
systems were evaluated
Delivery How to deliver the contents of the
database? Here are two options recommended.
