• Paul urges them to
• - be one in spirit and purpose
• - do nothing out of selfish ambition
• - consider others better than themselves
• - look to the interests of others as well as
  themselves
• Vs 3 humility is the key to help put these into
  practice

The example of Jesus

• Did not consider equality with God something to
  be grasped
• Made himself nothing
• Took on the nature of a servant
• Became a man
• Humbled himself
• Was obedient to dying on the cross

The difference

• SATAN (Pride) I WILL ascend to heaven. I WILL
  make MYSELF like God
• JESUS (Humility) THY WILL be done
• SATAN A creature wanting to be creator
• JESUS Creator who became man
• SATAN A rebel who tempts man to rebel
• JESUS Loves us and wants us to love
• ADAM EVE (Pride) Had all they needed and tried
  to be as God
• JESUS Had all he needed and laid aside his
  majesty to become man
• ADAM EVE Through their wrongdoing plunged the
  human race into sin and death
• JESUS Through his righteousness and death on the
  cross made sins forgiven and eternal life
  possible
• ADAM EVE Thought only of themselves
• JESUS Always thought of others

• Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
  and gave him the name that is above every name,
  that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
  in heaven and on earth, and every tongue confess
  that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God
  the Father. Phil 2 vs 9 - 11

Being like Jesus means

• Thinking of others
• Serving others
• Making sacrifices for others
• Always seeking to bring glory to God

• Clothe yourself with humility. 1 Peter 5 vs 5
• Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and
  whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matt 23
  vs 12
• Humble yourselves, therefore, under Gods mighty
  hand, that he may lift you up in due time. I
  Peter 5 vs 6
• Are you like Jesus?
