Guidance (1) The NIH Mission
  • The mission of NIH is to support and conduct
    scientific research in pursuit of fundamental
    knowledge about the nature and behavior of living
    systems and the application of that knowledge to
    extend healthy life and reduce the burdens of
    illness and disability for all citizens. To
    accomplish this, the NIH

  • Ensure that requests for NIH support are
    evaluated by groups of qualified individuals who
    possess (collectively)
  • Appropriate scientific and technical expertise to
    evaluate critical aspects of requests for NIH
    support
  • The capability to make objective judgments in a
    broad scientific context
  • The flexibility and receptivity necessary to
    address new areas of science and new
    technologies.
