What is mycobacterium tuberculosis?
  • A germ that causes tuberculosis (TB)
  • Usually ingested through the lungs (part of the
    respiratory system.)
  • Cannot survive in clean, well-ventilated, sunny
    environment, thrives in dark places

Symptoms of Tuberculosis
  • may appear years after contracting the disease
  • Fever
  • Night-Time Sweating
  • Loss of Weight
  • Persistent Cough
  • Constant Tiredness
  • Loss of Appetite

Treating and Preventing Tuberculosis
  • Skin tests can be done for the detection of TB
  • TB can be vaccinated against itself
  • Live but weakened bacteria is injected so that
    the body can get immunization.
  • Can be treated with 3 to 4 antibiotics that can
    be given in a combination over 6 to 9 months

How is it spread?
  • Transmitted by respiratory secretions from
    coughing (airborne)
  • Lives for weeks in the dark forming spores
  • Mycobacterium Tuberculosis sticks on to the lungs
    and doesn't let go.

Uses of Bacteria
  • Mycobacterium Tuberculosis is studied and
    vaccinated as a prevention to TB
  • Tuberculosis cases in the USA have fallen because
    of vaccines from the bacteria
