Title: RRC requirements for research

1
RRC requirements for research
  • Kay Vydareny, Chair, Dx Rad RRC

2
Program requirementsFaculty (III, B 4)
  • The responsibility for establishing and
maintaining an environment of inquiry and
scholarship rests with the faculty, and an active
research component must be included in each
    program.

3
  • While not all members of a teaching faculty must
be investigators, the faculty as a whole must
    (demonstrate broad involvement)
  • be involved in scholarly activity.

4
  • Scholarship is defined as the following
  • Scholarship of discovery (peer-reviewed funding
or publication of original research in a
    peer-reviewed journal)
  • Scholarship of dissemination (review articles or
    chapters in texts)

5
  • Scholarship of application (publication or
presentation of case reports of clinical series
at local, regional or national mtgs)

6
  • Complementary to the above scholarship is the
regular participation of the teaching staff in
clinical discussions, rounds, journal clubs and
research conferences in a manner that promotes a
    spirit of inquiry and scholarship

7
  • (eg, the offering of guidance and technical
support for residents involved in research such
as research design and statistical analysis) and
the provision of support for residents
    participation in scholarly activities

8
Program requirementsResidents (V, C)
  • Each program must provide an opportunity for
residents to participate in research or other
    scholarly activities, and residents must
participate actively in such scholarly activities

9
  • All residents (should) must have training in
critical thinking skills and (outcomes research)
research design. During their training, all
residents (should be encouraged to engage in an
investigative project) must engage in a scholarly
    project under faculty supervision.

10
  • This may take the form, for example, of
    laboratory research, clinical research, the
analysis of disease processes, imaging techniques
or practice management issues. (or the
retrospective analysis of data from patients, and)

11
  • The results of such projects (shall be suitable
for publication or presentation) must be
published or presented at local, regional or
national scientific meetings. The program must
specify how each project will be evaluated.

12
Citations 2005
  • 13 programs cited
  • (48 reviewed27)
  • 8 cited faculty
  • 1 cited residents
  • 4 cited faculty and residents

13
Citations for faculty
  • essentially no scholarly activity by faculty
  • limited participation by faculty in scholarly
activities resulting in publications. Only three
of fourteen full-time faculty list any
    publications
  • apart from VIR faculty, minimal scholarly
activity in terms of peer reviewed publications

14
  • the surveyor noted from interviews with the
faculty that the lack of dedicated time for
research is a weakness of the program
  • none of the facultyhas published an article in
    a refereed journal

15
Citations for residents
  • little support is given for residents to become
    involved in investigative activityPrograms must
    provide opportunities for residents to
participate in research or other scholarly
    activities and residents must participate
    actively in such activities

16
  • no evidence of training in critical thinking
skills or outcome research. Only one resident
    research project (2004) is listed
  • none of theresidents has published an article
    in a refereed journal

17
Conclusions
  • Mandatory inolvement of faculty as a whole in
    scholarly activity
  • Mandatory involvement of residents in a research
    project
  • Mandatory training of residents in research
    design
  • RRC will update the PIF to make certain that all
types of scholarship can be documented
