The Science Department
  • 13 Science teachers
  • 4 Laboratory Technicians
  • 13 Laboratories
  • 3 Sites
  • Hughes Block (3 new laboratories)
  • Turing and Newton Blocks (4 laboratories in each)
  • Redgrave Block- (2 mobile laboratories)

Practical Work
  • As a department we are committed to practical
    activities.
  • In order to do this we are supported by an
    excellent team of committed technicians.
  • We are also well supported by the SLT.

Departmental Structure and Organization
  • Rigid assessment programme, allowing rigorous
    monitoring.
  • This allows the department to highlight any
    issues with pupils or modules allowing prompt
    action to be taken.

  • In Year 7 each class has one teacher.
  • In year 8, 9, 10 11 the pupils Rotate thorough
    modules
  • Specialist teachers
  • Standard format of schemes of work
  • All pupils experience a variety of different
    teaching and learning styles.
  • Modules last between 10 and 15 lessons

  • At KS3 we achieved 75 level 5 and above, above
    the National average and well above the Sandwell
    average.
  • At KS4 we achieved 65 A -C above the National
    average and well above the Sandwell average. In
    the Core 76.
  • The Science Department has made a significant
    contribution to the progress made by the School
    in KS4 (Panda information and Jesson analysis)

    Year 9.

Pupil grouping
  • Year 7
  • 10 sets - the same across most subjects
  • within three ability bands.
  • Years 89
  • 5 sets in each of two half year populations in
  • three ability bands. This year we have added an
  • additional G T group to Yr 9 next year we will
  • add one to Yr 8.
  • Year 1011
  • One Gifted and Talented group plus 10 sets
  • across the whole year group in three ability
  • bands.

Revision programme
  • In preparation for the staged assessment in
    year 10 and the terminal examination in year 11
    we pursue an extensive revision programme.
  • How is it different?

Coursework
  • Specialist coursework teachers
  • Improve pupil scores.
  • Curriculum time as well as lunchtimes
  • and after school.
  • We have organised meetings for
  • Sandwell LEA to allow schools to share
  • good practice with Sandwell.

ICT
  • The Science Department has embraced ICT. In the
    classroom we have Interactive Whiteboards.
  • ICT suite
  • The SAM learning scheme.
  • Active Teach
  • Modules are continually being developed to
    include ICT. ICT is also an integral part of our
    monitoring, tracking and reporting process.
  • We are also involved in the learning gateway
    projects.

Assessment, Tracking and Monitoring
  • In KS4 the assessment structure is rigid.
  • Pupils are tested at the end of each module
    (every 2 3 weeks).
  • The results are then entered onto the internal
    network.
  • Internal analyses are also carried on all
    external examinations as well as internal
    examinations allowing us to pinpoint any possible
    problems as soon as possible.
  • Heads of department meet regularly with each
    other to share ideas and ensure the department is
    moving forward successfully.
  • The shared visions and goals of the department
    along with the support of the SLT has allowed us
    to supply practical resources, raising
    achievement, enthusiasm, enjoyment and
    achievement in Science.
