• A karyotype is an organized picture of a persons
  chromosomes.
• Scientists treat a cell with chemicals to freeze
  it in metaphase.
• They then take a picture of the chromosomes, cut
  them out and match them up using size, banding
  pattern and centromere position as guides

• Chromosomes are arranged and numbered by size
  from largest to smallest
• This arrangement helps scientist quickly identify
  chromosomal alterations that may result in a
  genetic disorder.
• What disorders can be seen?
• Those that involve additional, missing or damaged
  chromosomes.
