Title: Michigan K7 Science Assessment

1
Michigan K-7 Science Assessment
  • Joseph Martineau, Interim Director
  • Office of Educational Assessment Accountability

01/29/2008
2
Components/Disciplines
  • Science Process
  • Physical Science
  • Life Science
  • Earth Science

3
Details
  • Each Discipline includes Standards, Content
Statements (CS) and Science Content Expectations
    (SCE)
  • The Standards are the same across all grades
  • The CS and the SCE change, having new content and
increasing rigor in progression across grades

4
Measuring the Standards
  • Although the K - 7 science curriculum presents
grade-specific standards, CS, and SCE, OEAA will
    measure student performance using
  • An elementary grade-span test aligned to the 2nd,
    3rd, 4th grade SCE, and
  • A middle school grade-span test aligned to the
    5th, 6th, 7th grade SCE

5
Curriculum Summary
  • Elementary School Science (grades 2, 3, 4)
  • 4 Disciplines
  • 15 Standards
  • 39 Content Statements
  • 95 Science Content Expectations

6
Curriculum Summary
  • Middle School Science (grades 5, 6 7)
  • 4 Disciplines
  • 15 Standards
  • 41 Content Statements
  • 113 Science Content Expectations

7
K-1 Standards
  • K 1 standards, content statements are
fundamental and provide the basis for subsequent
    grade-level content
  • K 1 content will not be assessed directly

8
What will be assessed?
  • The test will assess and report on student
    performance in science
  • Each item will be aligned to a specific SCE
  • The items selected will represent each CS across
    the 15 standards
  • The item distribution (by discipline) will be
proportionate to the number of SCE in each
    discipline

9
Elementary school science
  • The elementary school science curriculum (grades
    2, 3, 4) includes
  • 3 Inquiry process standards with 3 CS 19 SCE,
  • 4 Life science standards with 9 CS 15 SCE,
  • 4 Physical science standards with 15 CS with 34
    SCE,
  • 4 Earth science standards with 12 CS 27 SCE
  • 15 standards with 39 CS 95 SCE
  • The sample of SCE aligned items will be selected
at random, in proportion to the number of SCE per
Standard such that each CS is represented by at
    least one test item

10
Middle school science
  • The middle school science curriculum (grades 5,
    6 7) includes
  • 3 Inquiry process standards with 3 CS 20 SCE,
  • 4 Life science standards with 13 CS 30 SCE,
  • 4 Physical science standards with 11 CS with 29
    SCE,
  • 4 Earth science standards with 14 CS 34 SCE
  • 15 standards with 41 CS 113 SCE
  • The sample of SCE aligned items will be selected
at random, in proportion to the number of SCE per
Standard such that each CS is represented by at
    least one test item

11
SCE Sampling Plans
  • Test items will be selected at random, using a
common set plus matrix set design
  • at least one test item per CS (39), selected at
random, establishing a common item set across all
forms plus a matrix of 16 items per form,
sampled from the SCEs not in the common set

12
Test Design Issues
  • Select items having a Depth of Knowledge (DOK)
that closely matches the DOK of the SCE
  • Have multiple test forms so that the matrix
sample covers all SCEs not selected for the
    common item set
  • Each test will include Operational and Field test
    items

13
Test Parameters
  • ES MEAP Science has (approx)
  • 51 operational items
  • 49 MC
  • 2 CRs (3-pt items aligned to a science process
    SCE)
  • 10 field test items
  • 9 MC
  • 1 CR
  • 61 total items
  • 58 MC
  • 3 CR

14
Test Parameters
  • MS MEAP Science has (approx)
  • 54 operational items
  • 52 MC
  • 2 CRs (3-pt items aligned to a science process
    SCE)
  • 10 field test items
  • 9 MC
  • 1 CR
  • 64 total items
  • 61 MC
  • 3 CR
