Introduction
USGS-ONT2-7
  • USGS Mission Statement The USGS serves the
    Nation by providing reliable scientific
information to describe and understand the Earth
    .
  • Provide Earth Science data including Earthquake /
Volcano / Flooding / Tsunami for research and
    civilian applications.
  • Major Centers at Reston (VA), Denver (CO), Menlo
Park (CA), EROS (Sioux Falls, SD).
  • DS-3/OC-3/OC-12 backbone connection between four
    centers.
  • EROS is the only Center currently pursuing
    optical connectivity.
  • Three petabyte archive of Land Remote Sensed
    data.
  • Ingested 500 terabytes of data in CY2004.
  • Distributed over 200 terabytes of data in CY2004.
  • Have distributed over 250 terabytes of data in
    CY2005.
  • 10x increase in data output from primary ftp
server in last 13 days (Katrina).
  • Current growth will exceed provisioned bandwidth
    in two years.
  • Primary need is not intra-USGS, but for Research,
    Govt. and Civilian application.

3
Research opportunities
USGS-ONT2-7
  • Research
  • NASA (500 TB /year) data ingest
  • LandSat Data Continuity Mission
  • Optiputer
  • Homeland Security
  • Providing detailed urban area data for 120
    cities.
  • NEON (National Ecological Observatory Network)

4
NLR and USGS locations

5
RON opportunity and status
USGS-ONT2-7
  • EROS will likely partner with the South Dakota
University Network system, along with BOREAS (MN,
WI, IA) and/or Great Plains Network (NE, KS, MS)
for redundant optical paths to Chicago/NLR.
  • Currently reviewing RFPs from BOREAS and GPN for
    creation of Regional Optical Networks.
  • Limited fiber IRU abilities within South Dakota.
  • May provision Layer 3 connection initially.

Five year timeline
8
Interoperability
USGS-ONT2-7
  • To early in the RFP process to determine exact
    technology.
  • Must be consistent with State of South Dakota
    technologies.
  • Interoperability issues may exist between GPN and
    BOREAS.

9
Key Issues
USGS-ONT2-7
  • Problems
  • Distance issues (Sioux Falls).
  • Inability to obtain fiber IRU within South
    Dakota.
  • Lack of funding.
  • DOI network consolidation.
  • Technology
  • Dependant upon which vendor contract is chosen.
