Title: The South River What

2The South River What?
3The South River Greenway!
The Heart of Anne Arundel County!
The South River Greenway is an important
ecological resource that is part of the
16,200-acre South River Watershed, which
discharges to the Chesapeake Bay.
The Watershed contains four major streams
totaling over 150 miles of waterways. The
Greenway serves as a green infrastructure
hub where large tracts of forest and wetlands
provide protected breeding grounds for songbirds
and wildlife. It is a stronghold for spawning
yellow perch and other fish species.

March 21, 2007 Maryland Board of Public Works
approved the transfer of 546 acres of forested
land on the west side of I-97 formerly owned by
the Crownsville Hospital Center. "It's very rare
that we get a natural, undeveloped parcel in the
middle of suburban Maryland,"
Dr. Cliff Andrew, President
Scenic Rivers Land Trust

Hiking the Crownsville property is an incredible
experience. The landscape contains forest and
non-forest ecosystems minimally disturbed by
human economic activity and a diversity of unique
ecological features such as this fifteen-acre
pond covered with Spatterdock Yellow Pond Lilies

The goal for the Countys greenway network is
to create an interconnected network of greenways
that protects ecologically valuable lands for
present and future generations and provides open
space, recreational, and transportation benefits
and opportunities for people. A benefit of
the Countys greenway network is to enhance the
beauty of the Countys landscape by reducing
fragmenting effects of development and preserving
valuable open space.

Currently, the Department of Recreation Parks
has forty-three active capital projects, many of
which are grant funded. Over the past two years,
the Department has improved accountability and
efficiency in grants management. In fiscal year
2007, approximately 300,000 of grant
reimbursements were collected. In fiscal year
2008, more than 12.7 million of grant
reimbursements were collected.

County Executive John R. Leopold heightened the
Countys recycling goal to a rate of 50.
"Recycling is not only vital to the
conservation of space in the countys only
remaining solid waste landfill, but also uses
less energy and saves natural resources," said
County Executive Leopold. "As leaders in county
government we should be setting the example for
our citizens." In keeping with the County
Executives directive, recycling receptacles were
placed in all regional and designated community
parks throughout the County.

21Criteria for Prioritizing Land Acquisitions
1. Ecological Sensitivity 2. Passive or
Active Recreational Benefit 3. Connectivity
to County-Owned Land 4. Compliance with Land
Preservation Plan 5. Size of the Property
6. Community Interest 7. Purchase Price
8. Other Subjective Benefits
Rather than simply picking and choosing parcels
at random, overarching criteria are utilized to
help create a plan that has focus, clarity and a
definitive strategy for the permanent protection
of the Countys open spaces.
Our quality of life is directly related to the
quality of our landscape.

The scattered pattern of modern development
tends to consume large amounts of land and
fragments landscapes. Fragmentation has adverse
ecological effects but also has negative effects
on the quality of life through the loss of
landscape character and scenic beauty, loss of
open spaces for people to enjoy, loss of
recreational opportunities and reduced air and
water quality.

Strong partnerships are built when people are
given the opportunity to have a direct impact
upon what happens in their community. Citizens,
service providers and decision makers must be
drawn together as stakeholders in the creation of
a vision and the process of actively pursuing
that vision. County Executive John R. Leopold
72The Department of Recreation Parks network of
partnerships is critical to protecting, managing
and restoring the Countys environmentally
sensitive land in a manner that preserves our
ecologically-valuable resources and provides
stewardship and volunteer opportunities for
County citizens.
