Piloting Recommended Lesson Plan for
Instructors and Quiz Homework Answers (4 hour
seminar)
2 Comments to Instructors The material used in
Chart Smart was extracted from The Squadron
Boating Course. The sequence of the chapters was
changed to better suit the topic flow for Chart
Smart. Use the CS Instructor Manual (IM) or,
alternatively, The Squadron Boating Course
Instructor Manual as the Instructor Manual for
the seminar. Below are the sections in Chart
Smart and the related chapter references in The
Squadron Boating Course, 2001 Edition. Click

Note class exercises are optional and depend
upon the classes ability to accommodate the base
material at the recommended pace at a minimum,
exercises 3, 5 6 should be covered (allow 20
minutes each).

5OPTIONAL - OPTIONAL Optional material for the
Section 2 slide presentation SAMPLE - SHIP'S
DEVIATION TABLE The deviation table is in a
separate Chart Smart ppt file for portrait style
slides. Note - this slide and all the examples
using deviation are optional depending upon a
squadron's desire to cover deviation. If used, a
hard copy of the deviation table should be given
to each student to facilitate the solving of the
class examples 3 and 4. None of the homework
utilizes deviation. Care should be used in
introducing students to interpolation at this
stage - see the note regarding interpolation on
the Sample - Ship's Deviation Table see example
4 with interpolation.

7OPTIONAL - OPTIONAL Optional material for the
Section 3 slide presentation Slides 4 5 have

slides. Note - these slides are optional
depending upon if OHTs are shown or an LCD
projector is used and the presenter's desire to
alternate between landscape and portrait styled

10OPTIONAL - OPTIONAL Optional material for the
Section 7 slide presentation The portrait
styled slides to augment slide 3, Plotting A
Course, are in a separate Chart Smart ppt file
for portrait style slides. The intent of these
slides is to have a full size version of slide 3
and to show an alternate plotter that students
may already have. Note - these slides are
optional depending upon if OHTs are shown or an
LCD projector is used and the presenter's desire
to alternate between landscape and portrait
styled charts.
11OPTIONAL - OPTIONALChart Smart Quiz
- The Chart Smart quiz is an optional informal
test to be used at the squadron's discretion.
The quiz will not be scored at "national" nor
will the results of the quiz be maintained by
USPS. The quiz, if used, should be scored in the
final class session and the student should be
informed of the results. The quiz can be used as
a part of the overall learning process and scored
in the same manner that the homework questions
were handled. The quiz is provided in a separate
Microsoft Word file (doc).
