Affiliate Country Programme
  • Two principal aims
  • Encourage greater awareness and use of
    international standards in newly industrialized
    countries and
  • Help them understand and participate in IEC
    technical work.
  • Affiliate Country Forum goals are
  • Act as a collective voice for all IEC Affiliates
  • Identify IEC issues that are relevant to newly
    industrialized countries
  • Seek common positions and communicate to IEC TCs.
  • 65 participating countries

Affiliate Country Programme 2
  • Form of participation through full use of
    existing IT tools.
  • Encouragement to become IEC members.
  • Starting to deliver results
  • Kazakhstan, The Former Yugoslav Republic of
    Macedonia and Kenya have become Associate Members
    of the IEC.

Associates rights
  • Additional voting rights on up to four TCs or
    SCs.
  • All Associates have access rights to all working
    documents and final publications (for commercial
    and internal use).
  • Emphasis on choosing and focusing on relevant
    technical work.

Regional centres
  • One in Singapore and one in Boston.
  • IEC now considering best location for a third
    centre in Latin America.
  • Goals
  • promote awareness of IEC in region
  • increase use of IEC International Standards
  • enhance participation of all countries in the
    region in the Commissions work.

SMB strategy and expansion
  • New standardization strategy. Key features
  • Ensure development of market relevant standards
  • Support the promotion of worldwide acceptance and
    use of IEC standards, whenever possible without
    modifications
  • Ensure representation in IEC structure and
    processes from all sectors, levels and material
    interests in industry.
  • New technologies
  • TC 111 on the environment created in October
    2004
  • New TC for nanotechnologies being created.

  • First IEC/IEEE International Standards published
    in May and July 2004 IEC 60488-1 and 60488-2.
  • Agreement being monitored.
  • Corrective action to ensure all scenarios
    covered.
  • Interest from other SDOs in this programme.

  • 1 being finalized
  • 4 being approved by SMB
  • 1 in voting period for approval by SMB
  • 1 refused by SMB.

  • IEC continues to remain committed to ensuring
    global relevance of its standards.
  • Essential differences in requirements based on
  • Infrastructure
  • Climate.
  • SMB approved EDRs to SC23H and SC23B for further
    processing. CB to address open issues.

IEC and CANENA
  • Since signature of cooperation agreement in 2000
  • CANENA and IEC Officers attend each others'
    annual meetings
  • CANENA is recognized at the SMB and provides
    annual reports of its activities
  • A forum on the Global Relevance of IEC standards
    was held at the last CANENA annual meeting
  • Common objectives for standards and conformity
    assessment in the Americas
  • Help the acceptance and recognition of the value
    of the IEC standards and schemes in trade
    facilitation
  • Question Should the IEC CO, IEC NCs and CANENA
    develop a cooperative plan for the region?
