The Organization Of living Things

2Introduction
In some ways, organisms are like machines. Some
machines have just one part. But most machines
have many parts. Some organisms exist as a
single cell. Other organisms have many even
trillions of cells (many smaller than the
period that ends this sentence).
3Machines
Simple Axe
Compound Car
4Organisms
Unicellular Paramecium
Multicellular Humans
5Humans are Multi-cellular
- Benefits of being multi-cellular
- 1) Larger Size
- 2) Longer Life
- 3) Specialization
6Larger Size
- Many multicellular organisms are small, but they
are usually bigger than single-celled organisms. - Larger organisms are prey for fewer predators.
- Larger predators can eat a larger variety of prey.

9LONGER LIFE
- The life span of a multi-cellular organism is not
limited to the life span of any single cell.
10Specialization
- Each particular job is assigned to each type of
cell. - Specialization makes the organism more efficient.
- For example heart muscle cells contract and make
the heart pump blood.
11Cell Specialization
12Tissue- a group of similar cells that perform a
common function
TISSUE
- Animals have four basic types of tissue nerve,
muscle, connective, and protective tissue. - In contrast, plants have three types of tissues
transport, protective, and ground tissue.
13Transport tissue moves water and nutrients
through a plant. Protective tissue covers the
plant. Photosynthesis takes place in ground
tissue.
14Organ- a collection of tissue that carry out a
specialized function of the body .
- DID YOU KNOW THAT?
- Plants have organs too?

16Organ Systems
Organ system- a group of organs that work
together to perform body functions Respiratory
system Cardiovascular system Digestive
system Leaf systems Root systems Stem systems
17ORGANISMS
Anything that can perform life processes by
itself is called an organism. Unicellular and
Multicellular
18Structure and Function
In organisms, structure and function are related
Structure - the arrangements of parts in an
organism (shape and material). Function the job
the part does (normal activity of an organ or
system).
