Title: Diversity of Life Protista

1
Diversity of Life- Protista -
2
What are Protista?
A very diverse group of unicellular (usually but
not always) eukaryotes. Most primitive creatures
to have organelles and nuclei bound by
membranes BUT Protista as a group doesnt
exist anymore - just used as a convenience.
3
Original members of the Protista
4
Why are Protista so diverse?
ENDOSYMBIOSIS
5
Why are Protista so diverse?
  • Whats the evidence?
  • DNA in organelles of red and green algae is very
    similar to cyanobacterial DNA
  • Number of membranes that surround the organelles

6
Groups that well be dealing with
7
Protist groups - Euglenozoa
Key Characteristic -spiral or crystalline rod
inside the flagellum
8
Euglenozoa - Euglena
eyespot
Contractile vacuole
nucleus
Paramylon granule
9
Protist groups - Alveolata
Key characteristic - Alveoli - sacs under the
plasma membrane
alveoli
plasma membrane
10
Protist groups - Alveolata
Some important members of the group -
Dinoflagellates - some poisonous species
Red tide
11
Protist groups - Alveolata
Some important members of the group -
Dinoflagellates - some useful species -
symbiotic with corals and other marine animals
12
Protist groups - Alveolata
Some important members of the group - Ciliates
- use cilia (not flagella) for locomotion -
possess both micro- and macronuclei
contractile vacuole
oral groove
macronucleus
food vacuole
Paramecium
13
Protist groups - Alveolata
Paramecium reproduction
14
Protist groups - Stramenopila - possess two
types of flagella - hairy and smooth
15
Protist groups - Stramenopila
Brown algae - seaweeds (kelp)
16
Protist groups - Stramenopila
Brown algae - seaweeds (kelp)
Thallus
17
Protist groups - Stramenopila
Brown algae - alternation of generations
18
Protist groups - Amoebozoa
Key characteristic - lobe-shaped pseudopodia
19
Protist groups - Amoebozoa
Gymnamoeba
- feeding
20
Protist groups - Amoebozoa - cellular slime molds
