Year 9 Science Programme
  • A new Year 9 student will be placed in either
  • Alternative Science.
  • Mainstream Science.
  • Extension Science.

Selection Process
  • Identifying the best programme for a Year 9
    student depends upon
  • Results from the Year 8 Entrance test in
    November.
  • Collaboration with the Deans using
    information from the feeder schools.

Year 9 Science
  • All science classes will follow the New Zealand
    Curriculum.
  • Curriculum Level 5 is taught to all groups,
    however Extension groups go into more depth with
    enrichment activities, while the Alternative
    groups cover the basic concepts.

Assessments
  • Each topic will assess
  • Basic recall of knowledge learnt from the topic.
  • Each topic may assess one or more of
  • Focus and Planning skills.
  • Information Gathering skills.
  • Processing Information skills.
  • Communicating Information skills.
  • End of Year Examination
  • Assesses the recall of knowledge from all the
    topics taught (except Stars) in the Year 9
    programme.

Homework
  • Approximately 1 hour per week
  • For each topic there is a Homework booklet. The
    homework tasks relate directly to objectives set
    out in the teaching programme.
  • Teachers may set additional homework as they see
    fit to reinforce or consolidate their lessons.
  • Assignments are set. These are used to assess
    students ability to research and present
    Scientific concepts.
  • Course fee (approx. 3) helps to cover the cost
    of the homework booklets.

Expectations
  • A typical science lesson may involve
  • Written work.
  • Drawing diagrams and graphs.
  • Practical activity.
  • Questions.
  • Group work.
  • Students are expected to be equipped with basic
    stationary, such as books, pens, pencil and a
    ruler.
  • Students are expected to display high standards
    of behaviour in a Science Laboratory, to ensure a
    safe working environment for all members of the
    class.

  • Identifying the best programme for a Year 10
    student depends upon
  • Year 9 Performance in topic tests and
    exams.
  • Consultation with their Yr 9 Science
    teachers and Deans.

  • This is a combination of NCEA Level 1 and 2
