1
RFP Summary Page Skylight Product Rating for
Energy Performance and Lighting Quality
  • Dr. Aziz Laouadi
  • Indoor Environment Research Program

2
Description
  • The research develops simulation procedures to
rate projecting and tubular skylight products
with their attachments for energy performance and
lighting quality, and provides clients with a
    standard skylight rating tool.

3
Objectives
  • Develop simulation procedures for VT, SHGC,
U-factor of skylights and their attachments
    (curb/well/ ceiling diffusers).
  • Develop new metrics for lighting quality (view,
privacy, visual comfort) for skylights and
    windows.
  • Validate the simulation procedures (using
    physical and human subjects measurements).
  • Implement the simulation procedures in SkyVision
and integration with the WINDOW and THERM.

4
Benefits to NFRC
  • Project provides a rating tool for skylights
integrated with existing NFRC- approved tools.
  • NFRC to support the needs of glass and plastic
    industries.
  • More memberships to NFRC.
  • Support compliance with building codes
  • Help stimulate innovation in skylights

5
Cost / Duration / Partners
  • Estimated cost/duration 325K (min) over 3 years
  • Potential Co-sponsors
  • NRCan (Canadian Federal Government)
  • Skylight and Plastics Manufacturers
  • ASHRAE (tubular skylight component)
  • California Energy Commission
  • US Dept. of Energy
  • Potential Research Collaborators
  • National Research Council Canada (algorithm
    development, implementation into SkyVision)
  • Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
    (implementation into Window software, maintenance
    of material property database)
  • Heschong Mahone Group (skylight performance
    measurements)
