QUIZ TIME!
  • Magnets attract metals.
  • True False

3
  • While many people believe magnets attract ALL
metals, in reality they only attract iron,
cobalt, and nickel. Steel contains iron, so it is
    attracted by magnets.
  • This is a fairly common misconception. Just by
testing a magnet on different metal objects, you
can see for yourself it doesn't attract ALL of
    them.

4
QUIZ TIME!
  • If a magnet size increased, would its
strength scale up at the same rate?

5
Magnets strength has little to do with its
size Inside a magnet, there is billions of
individual atoms that have their own magnetic
field. The fields cause the atoms to align in
clusters of attraction. The aligned clusters
of atoms then form magnetic domains. (Cadice and
Ortleb, 1991) These domains then align with the
magnetic field and cause the magnetic property.

Activities on Magnets Light ( sources CDIS
books, i-Science My Pals are here ) There are
2 sets of activities (A and B) on a changeover
basis between two groups after half-time
  • Set A
  • Activity 1 Does the attraction of a magnet pass
  • through all materials?
  • Activity 2 Finding the poles of a bar magnet
  • Activity 3 Making a magnet by stroking
  • Activity 4 Making a magnet by using electricity
  • Set B
  • Activity 5 Light and sight
  • Activity 6 Measuring the shadow of a nail
    (modified expt )

Activity 1Magnets
  • Group into groups of 3 or 4
  • Read the instructions given for the experiments
carefully and carry out the experiments
  • Answer the questions given in the worksheets
  • Discuss the difficulty pupils might encounter
    while doing these experiments
  • Discuss on the pre-requisite knowledge needed
    before these experiments
  • Discuss on the possible misconceptions and how
    you can rectify them.

9
ACTIVITY 2Light
  • In your groups, work on the experiments related
    to light
  • Discuss the difficulty pupils might encounter
    while doing these experiments
  • Discuss on the pre-requisite knowledge needed
    before these experiments
  • Discuss on the possible misconceptions and how
    you can rectify them.
