Civil Support Skills Course
  • Length 8 weeks, 4 days
  • Modules
  • Chemistry
  • This module is 80 hours long and provides
students with the basic knowledge of chemicals
chemical processes and chemical reactions. It
focuses on core concepts such as elements, atoms,
    atomic structure, electron configurations,
chemical bonding, organic compounds, states of
matter, gases, solutions, acids and bases,
    oxidation-reduction reactions, electrochemistry,
    equilibrium, and thermodynamics.
  • Awareness
  • The Awareness module is 16 hours and meets the
objectives of NFPA 472 and OSHA 29CFR1910.120.
Topics include the laws and standards of
    hazardous materials, identifying placards and
containers, recognizing when there is the
presence of a hazardous material, understanding
material safety data sheets and shipping papers,
and using the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG)
  • Operations
  • The Operations module is 32 hours includes topics
such as an overview of hazardous materials, using
the recognition and identification clues in risk
    assessment, basic monitoring, decontamination,
estimating the likely harm and risks, and
determining the options of intervention and
    non-intervention. The second module provides
hands-on skills including mitigating the spread
of hazards through applications of dikes, dams,
and diversions, applying foam, and performing
    emergency decontamination
  • Technician
  • This module is 80 hours and addresses 29 CFR
1910.120 subpart q and NFPA Standard 472. Topics
include hazards and risks, sources of assistance,
    personal protective equipment, hazardous material
    terms, control and confinement, toxicology,
    decontamination, site safety practices, surveying
    instruments and assessment, and HAZMAT
    mitigation.
  • HAPSITE
  • Basic HAPSITE. This module is 32 hours with
    topics including the Characteristics and
Components of the HAPSITE GC/MS, Theory of
Operation, Operating the HAPSITE GC/MS to include
Start-up and Tuning, Identification of Unknown
Compounds using Full Scan, Data Analysis and
    Identification of unknown compounds. Further
training consists of Survey for Unknown Compounds
in MS mode only, Data Analysis and Information
Reporting, Identification of the Presence of Low
    Concentration Contaminants, and Systematic
    Operations.
  • Site Entry and Sampling (CSSC Specific)
  • The Site Entry and Sampling module is 32 hours
and trains the response team member on the proper
procedures for conducting Site Entry and Sampling
Operations. Students identify and assess CBRN
hazards at suspected HAZMAT sites. Training
topics include initial on site actions,
establishing a Tactical Operations Center, the
    Decontamination Line, Sampling Techniques,
Sampling Operations and the application of the
    incident Management System.
