3Commercial Spaceflight Safety Committee
- AST is chairing the IAF Commercial Spaceflight
Safety Committee, established in 2008 - Co-Chairs are Virgin Galactic Swedish Space
Corp. - Idea is to discuss safety and regulatory policy
issues, identify and advance best practices to
maximize safety and international compatibility - Not to create standards
- Global discussion includes commercial industry,
government agencies and academia
4What is the IAF?
- The International Astronautical Federation (IAF)
is an international non-governmental and
non-profit organization established in 1951. - The Federation encourages the advancement of
knowledge about space and the development and
application of space assets for the benefit of
humanity. It plays an important role in
disseminating information, and in providing a
significant worldwide network of experts in the
development and utilization of space.
5IAF Member Organizations
- The IAF has members in 48 countries and the
membership is rapidly evolving, including nearly
200 organizations. - The IAF is composed of space agencies, space
companies, societies, associations and
institutes. It is a Federation of volunteers. - COMSTAC member organizations that also belong IAF
include (NGC, LMC, ATK, AIAA, Boeing)
6What is the IAC
- Every year since 1951, the Federation (IAF)
together with its associates, the International
Academy of Astronautics (IAA) and the
International Institute of Space Law (IISL), has
organized the International Astronautical
Congress (IAC). - The Congress constitutes the most well-known IAF
activity and it is hosted by rotating member
countries. - IAC encourages the advancement of knowledge about
space. It is held in connection with a major
space exhibition. Its intention is to enable
representatives from the space industry, space
users, space policy makers, students, young
professionals, researchers and academicians to
meet and exchange experiences and knowledge, and
to develop worldwide cooperation programs.
