Goals of Tabletop Exercise

• Provide participants with a better understanding
  of avian flu disease and its implications
• Convene stakeholders who have an interest or role
  in responding to avian flu and identify roles of
  these responders
• Identify problems and solutions related to
  response

Sunday, May 15, 2005 evening

• There are no other cases of avian flu in the US
  at this time.
• A middle-aged Asian man arrives by ambulance at
  San Ramon Regional Medical Center in respiratory
  distress. He is admitted to the hospital.
• A young Asian man walks into Contra Costa
  Regional Medical Center ER with a flu-like
  illness. He is sent away.

Monday, May 16, 2005 evening

• The frightened young man returns to Contra Costa
  Regional Medical Center ER saying that his uncle
  just died in San Ramon and that they returned on
  Saturday from Vietnam. Young man is admitted
  with respiratory distress and is in critical
  condition.

Wednesday, May 18, 2005 morning

• Avian flu (H5N1) confirmed by the State Public
  Health Lab.
• Public Health investigation finds 2 more ill
  family members an 8 year old niece and a
  grandmother. They did not travel to Vietnam.
• All hospitals are reporting an increase in
  emergency room visits and asking to go on
  diversion they are also running out of masks and
  Tamiflu.
